Senior Commissioning Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Michigan.

📋 Description

• Plan, organize, and oversee the construction, testing, and commissioning of substation Protection & Control (P&C) activities for intricate capital projects and programs.

• Evaluate project designs, bills of material (BOMs), equipment submissions, work plans, commissioning documentation, and safety protocols to ensure readiness and compliance with company standards.

• Create commissioning plans, testing procedures, checklists, and functional test documentation while outlining necessary inspections, measurements, and acceptance criteria.

• Offer technical supervision of subcontractors, construction teams, and commissioning staff to guarantee quality, safety, and effective project execution.

• Manage and sanction all testing, commissioning, startup, and verification tasks for relays, control systems, AC/DC distribution systems, batteries, RTUs, DFRs, IEDs, communications systems, and related substation equipment.

• Oversee the installation, modification, integration, and decommissioning of substation equipment, including relay panels, control house systems, control and communications cabling, and other P&C infrastructure.

• Conduct site assessments to review existing and new installations, verify construction quality, witness testing and energization processes, and troubleshoot technical issues.

• Facilitate coordination meetings with engineering, operations, maintenance, construction, and client stakeholders to align project goals, timelines, outages, and commissioning efforts.

• Ensure compliance with design specifications, company standards, regulatory requirements, and commissioning guidelines throughout all stages of project execution.

• Enhance operational readiness by examining startup and maintenance documentation, facilitating training sessions, and supporting operations and maintenance staff during system turnover and final acceptance.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred.

• At least 8 years of experience in electric utility P&C engineering and commissioning.

• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred; candidates with over 15 years of relevant utility P&C engineering and commissioning experience may be considered in place of PE registration.

• Extensive knowledge of protection philosophies, relay configurations, fault analysis, and advanced troubleshooting techniques.

• Proven experience in leading, coordinating, and supervising substation P&C commissioning and testing operations.

• Authority and technical expertise to review, approve, and validate commissioning work, ensuring compliance with company standards, regulatory obligations, and industry practices.

• Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities, with the ability to provide technical guidance and quality oversight for commissioning teams.

• Proficient in computer systems, networks, and mobile app skills: Microsoft Office suite, mapping drive letters for server connections, and managing handheld device applications in 'The Cloud' or other necessary locations.

• Exceptional facilitation, team-building, collaboration, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.

• Highly effective communicator, with strong writing and presentation skills.

• High attention to detail and a capability to conduct quality reviews of work.

• Competence in forensically assessing energy-consuming systems to identify and evaluate deficiencies, quantify energy losses, and assess costs.

• Experience in providing leadership to a diverse project team is a plus.

• A valid driver’s license and a clean driving record are required.

• Ability to read company manuals, reports, workplace rules, and procedures; communicate with confidence and clarity, using proper English.
