Senior Backend Engineer, Tenant Scale – Git

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Engage in architectural conversations and technical decisions regarding Git and Gitaly, actively influencing implementation choices that enhance correctness, performance, and maintainability.

• Contribute to the development of features, bug fixes, and performance enhancements for upstream Git, aligning with team and community objectives to deliver improvements in repository access and reliability for users.

• Modify Gitaly to effectively leverage Git functionalities by integrating newly available features aimed at enhancing scalability, efficiency, and long-term maintainability.

• Bridge discussions within the open-source Git project with GitLab's product vision and engineering initiatives, ensuring upstream contributions are aligned with product and platform requirements.

• Define tasks, estimate efforts, and outline implementation strategies that align with the team's priorities, facilitating predictable delivery of technical work.

• Test and validate the features you develop and integrate, prioritizing correctness and reliability to minimize regressions and ensure stable production use.

• Collaborate with team members, contributors, and the Git ecosystem.

• Act as a positive representative of GitLab within the open-source ecosystem, fostering productive relationships that encourage ongoing collaboration with the Git community.

⛳️ Requirements

• Proven experience in building instrumented and observable software systems.

• In-depth knowledge of Git internals, including its code and data structures, or hands-on experience with operating Git servers.

• Demonstrated experience in writing and testing production-quality code in C.

• Background in contributing to open-source projects, including Git or similar systems, and effectively collaborating in public spaces.

• Familiarity with Go for backend development, along with a solid understanding of Linux internals such as processes, memory management, input/output, and filesystems.

• Interest or experience in large-scale or distributed systems, storage formats, graph theory, or high-availability production environments, including relevant backend or infrastructure experience.
