Senior Backend Engineer – Java, Teams & Education

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Australia.

📋 Description

• Implement sharing and permissions functionalities across Canva’s products, including the primary design interface, content management, and brand.

• Suggest creative strategies and solutions to enhance Canva’s product decision frameworks and achieve business objectives.

• Drive enhancements by drafting design documentation and facilitating design discussions.

• Champion best practices that improve service performance, resilience, and flexibility.

• Design and execute complex system components while addressing intricate technical challenges.

• Oversee the implementation of major projects, organize task breakdowns, and ensure engineers are coordinated through effective verbal and written communication, including architectural diagrams.

• Guide and mentor engineers, assisting them in overcoming technical obstacles and supporting their professional growth.

• Coordinate and lead cross-team efforts that enhance reliability, speed, and security.

⛳️ Requirements

• Significant experience in developing distributed web applications.

• In-depth knowledge of Java.

• Demonstrated history of planning and executing complex architectural transformations.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication and collaboration skills.

• Proven experience in mentoring and leading engineering teams, resolving technical challenges, and serving as a role model.

• Comprehensive understanding of computer science and engineering principles, including concurrency, data structures, and distributed systems.

• Strong grasp of resiliency techniques such as load balancing, throttling, back pressure, and circuit breaking.

• Practical experience in large distributed cloud environments; experience with AWS is preferred.

• Familiarity with cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes and Terraform.

• Bonus: Experience with a large-scale distributed asset management system.
