Senior Backend Engineer – AI Governance

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Develop and enhance the AI audit event pipeline, encompassing event ingestion, schema normalization, storage architecture, partitioning, data retention, and export functionalities.

• Establish access control for AI Governance features by integrating permissions for audit logs, policy configurations, and governance dashboards into GitLab's existing authorization framework.

• Contribute backend functionalities for the AI agent artifact feature, facilitating structured storage and retrieval of agent run metadata alongside current CI/CD artifacts.

• Create backend services for the MCP registry, including tool metadata and enforcement controls that can restrict or deny access when necessary.

• Design and refine data models and queries for high-write, event-driven systems utilizing PostgreSQL and ClickHouse.

• Develop and uphold robust RSpec and integration test coverage, while assisting in enhancing team test reliability practices.

• Participate in architectural decisions and deliver implementations with accountability, collaborating closely with partner teams in AI and Continuous Delivery.

⛳️ Requirements

• Significant experience in building backend applications using Ruby on Rails in production settings.

• Expertise in Python and experience in developing backend services that support AI infrastructure, gateways, or related product systems.

• Extensive familiarity with PostgreSQL and other data-intensive databases like ClickHouse, including schema design, partitioning strategies, and effective query patterns for event-heavy workloads.

• Experience in creating REST or GraphQL APIs and designing backend systems for dependable storage, retrieval, and governance workflows.

• Strong understanding of authorization, access control, and enterprise governance principles within web application architectures.

• Knowledge of regulatory compliance, auditability, or enterprise governance requirements, with the capability to implement them in production systems.

• Excellent written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a remote, asynchronously-focused team.

• Beneficial experience includes audit trails, telemetry, event streaming, SIEM integrations, webhook delivery, enterprise retention requirements, AI agent infrastructure, large language models, the Model Context Protocol (MCP), or compliance, observability, and enterprise security products.
