Senior Back End Engineer, Python

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Brazil.

📋 Description

• Take charge of and enhance essential systems for freight brokerage operations and associated services, which include quoting, booking, pricing and rate logic, contracts, carrier compliance, facility matching, location/address data quality, and scheduling-related workflows.

• Spearhead technical initiatives across multiple Python/Django services, focusing on design, phased implementation, and safe deprecation—not limited to individual service features.

• Propel platform and reliability efforts: upgrades for databases and dependencies, modifications in search/indexing, performance optimization (queries, indexing, caching), secrets/credential patterns, and tools that mitigate poor deployment risks (such as migration safety and validation pipelines).

• Deliver high-impact product and revenue initiatives: integrations for pricing and benchmarks, compliance/load-registration processes, feature-flag and segmentation strategies, and scope shaping that connects technical design to business results.

• Establish engineering standards for the squad and beyond: architectural decision records (ADRs), shared client/integration layers, testing and observability practices, and a code review culture that fosters learning (SOLID principles, architecture, detailed PRs)—including common patterns shared between API and UI.

• Manage production systems: incident response, war-room coordination, root-cause analysis, and rapid stabilization pull requests when freight brokerage operations are at risk.

• Work closely with product teams on discovery and requirements—defining problems, refining scope with technical options, and occasionally presenting outcomes to senior stakeholders.

• Mentor and elevate teammates through pair programming, design reviews, and informal leadership—without necessarily holding a formal management position.

⛳️ Requirements

• Senior back-end engineer with a proven history of managing ambiguous, multi-step projects from start to finish across API and UI (design → implementation → rollout → observability), akin to tech lead-level delivery on a mission-critical system.

• Proficient in Python and Django (or possess significant transferable skills: e.g., extensive professional experience in Java/JVM ecosystems coupled with substantial Python web work in production).

• Expertise in PostgreSQL: schema design, production database migrations, query plans, indexing, and resolving latency/regression issues—not just CRUD operations.

• Familiarity with distributed systems and the multi-service landscape: async jobs/queues, events, idempotency, integration failures, and debugging across service boundaries.

• Demonstrated impact beyond just “greenfield” projects: experience in large or evolving codebases, modernization (framework/DB/search/runtime upgrades), or cost/performance improvements with quantifiable outcomes.

• Production-oriented mindset: experience with on-call duties or equivalent, incident response, and prioritizing stability under operational pressure.

• Technical leadership demonstrated without reliance on title: examples of leading migrations, integrations, or architectural decisions; mentoring; and aligning engineers across teams.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills: design documents, ADRs, RFCs, or review discussions that other engineers utilize as references.
