
Sea Ice Model Evaluations and Applications Scientist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.
• Analyze guidance from systems including the Global Forecast System (GFS), Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS), Seasonal Forecast System (SFS), and Real-Time Ocean Forecast System (RTOFS).
• Enhance the operational application of Arctic sea ice guidance for forecast Days 8–14 and explore its use at other time frames.
• Collaborate with USNIC forecasters, NWS OTC scientists, model developers, and external partners to evaluate model performance.
• Evaluate how IMS products can better assist in model initialization and assessment.
• Present a prototype of extended-range sea ice guidance for the USNIC.
• Offer recommendations concerning the scientific and operational readiness of assessed guidance for possible transition to operational use.
• Familiarity with numerical weather, ocean, sea ice, or coupled Earth-system modeling.
• Background in model testing, evaluation, or forecast validation.
• Strong proficiency in Python for scientific data analysis.
• Experience in handling gridded environmental datasets and formats such as NetCDF or GRIB.
• Proficient in working within a UNIX or Linux environment.
• Capacity to convey technical insights to scientists, software developers, and operational analysts and forecasters.
• A degree in Atmospheric Science, Oceanography, or other Geophysical Sciences, Engineering, Computer Sciences, or Mathematics (a Bachelor's degree is preferred, with an advanced degree being highly desirable).
• Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in related fields.
