This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California.
• Contribute significantly to the advancement and growth of the Anthropic Economic Index, encompassing quarterly reports and in-depth analysis tailored to specific industries.
• Design and execute empirical research focused on the economic implications of AI, utilizing both external data sources and internal privacy-preserving measurement systems.
• Innovate new methodological strategies for analyzing AI's influence on:
• Labor markets and the future workforce.
• Productivity shifts and task transformations.
• Economic inequality and workforce displacement.
• Disruption and adaptation within specific industries.
• Overall economic trends (GDP, productivity, unemployment) across various AI-adoption scenarios.
• Create causal-inference tools — such as surrogate indexes and heterogeneous-effect pipelines — to assist Anthropic in assessing the downstream economic effects of its compute, product, and pricing strategies.
• Establish and nurture partnerships with academic institutions, policy think tanks, and other research collaborators.
• Collaborate across functions with other technical teams to enhance our measurement infrastructure and data collection processes.
• Convert research findings into practical recommendations for product development and policy dialogues.
• Increase external engagement through research publications, policy briefs, and presentations aimed at a variety of stakeholders.
• PhD in Economics.
• Proven success in empirical research, particularly in studies that integrate novel data sources with economic theory or those that apply cutting-edge methods in causal inference and machine learning.
• Experience pertinent to analyzing AI’s economic impact, including:
• Labor market analysis and changes in occupations.
• Task-oriented approaches to technological change.
• Large-scale data analysis and econometric methodologies.
• Application of large language models in social science research.
• Conducting policy-relevant economic studies.
• Utilizing experimental and quasi-experimental methods for causal inference.
• Engaging in macroeconomic modeling and time series forecasting.
• Implementing agent-based modeling or large-scale simulations.
• Technical competencies such as:
• Proficiency in Python, R, SQL, or similar tools suitable for large-scale data analysis.
• Experience with innovative datasets and measurement systems.
• Willingness to learn new technical tools and frameworks.
• Proven capability to:
• Manage complex research projects from inception to publication.
• Articulate technical findings to diverse audiences.
• Cultivate relationships across academic, policy, and industry sectors.
• A strong commitment to ensuring that AI development serves the interests of humanity.
• Comfort in working with AI systems and a capacity for critical thinking regarding their capabilities and limitations.
