This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Offer legal analysis and counsel regarding federal and state mortgage lending laws and regulations, ensuring the organization's compliance.
• Lead and assist in managing regulatory changes, which includes tracking legal developments, interpreting requirements, and advising on implementation strategies across affected business sectors.
• Work collaboratively as legal counsel for new and expanded business projects, products, and business lines, assessing regulatory risks and structuring compliant solutions.
• Conduct thorough legal research and provide clear, actionable guidance to business and compliance stakeholders.
• Collaborate with Senior Regulatory Counsel and cross-functional teams (including Compliance, Operations, Product, and Technology) to create practical, business-oriented solutions to regulatory challenges.
• Convert legal and regulatory requirements into operational controls within loan origination systems (e.g., Encompass) and compliance tools (e.g., Mavent).
• Develop and maintain internal compliance resources, including guidance materials such as a Mavent Compliance Guide.
• Draft, review, and update policies and procedures to align with regulatory changes, new products, and evolving business practices.
• Identify regulatory risks and compliance gaps, recommending strategies for mitigation and process enhancements.
• Assist with internal audits, examinations, and regulatory inquiries, including preparing necessary responses and documentation.
• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
• Active bar membership in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
• A minimum of 2 years of relevant legal or regulatory compliance experience in the banking or mortgage sector is preferred.
• Experience in advising on consumer mortgage lending laws and regulations, including TILA/Regulation Z, RESPA, ECOA, HMDA, and applicable state laws.
• Background in supporting regulatory change management and/or product counseling within a financial services context.
• Familiarity with loan origination systems (e.g., Encompass) and compliance tools (e.g., Mavent) is preferred.
• Strong analytical, issue-spotting, and problem-solving abilities.
• Excellent communication skills, adept at providing clear and concise legal guidance to a diverse range of stakeholders.
• Proficient in interpreting complex legal requirements and translating them into practical, operationally sound business solutions.
• Capable of managing multiple priorities and functioning effectively in a dynamic, evolving regulatory landscape.
