R&D Director

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Direct the engineering team and formulate the technical strategy for ProgressionLIVE.

• Take ownership of the platform's technical roadmap and convert it into actionable engineering plans that align with business goals.

• Make architectural decisions and stand by them.

• Advance the Java backend (Spring + Hibernate) and the web frontend (Vue 3 / TypeScript).

• Oversee the mobile strategy.

• Guarantee the reliability, security, and scalability of a multi-tenant SaaS solution hosted on AWS.

• Establish and uphold contemporary engineering practices.

• Manage the platform's security posture.

• Monitor key technical metrics: uptime, performance, code quality, velocity, and technical debt.

• Lead the integration of agentic AI tools throughout the development lifecycle.

• Mentor developers, QA, and DevOps in the practical application of tools.

• Design and implement agentic workflows that boost team productivity.

• Identify significant automation opportunities within engineering.

• Recruit, mentor, and nurture the engineering team.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 7 years of software engineering experience, including a minimum of 3 years in a technical leadership role (team lead, engineering manager, lead developer, software architect, or equivalent).

• Strong backend expertise. Capable of reading and reasoning about a Java monolith (Spring + Hibernate), understanding its trade-offs, and leading a team responsible for its maintenance and evolution.

• Strong frontend instincts. Proficiency in modern Vue or React ecosystems with TypeScript, adequate for making architectural decisions and reviewing delivered work.

• Extensive AWS experience: Elastic Beanstalk, EKS, Aurora, S3, SES, IAM, networking. Proven experience operating a multi-tenant SaaS in production, with a clear opinion on trade-offs between managed services, containers, and serverless architectures.

• Experience in database design. Familiarity with Amazon Aurora MySQL or similar, with insights into multi-tenant schema design and query performance at scale.

• Expertise in CI/CD and IaC: GitHub Actions, Terraform, and a solid understanding of what a production deployment pipeline entails.

• Practical security background. Ability to interpret a SAST/DAST report, assess vulnerabilities based on real risk, and lead the response efforts.

• Experience with mobile platforms. Understanding the trade-offs between native and hybrid approaches, mobile API design and versioning, backward compatibility, offline behavior, and synchronization.

• Product sense. Awareness that the best technical decisions serve both the user and the business, with experience in a product-driven environment.

• Demonstrated, hands-on experience with agentic AI tools in your daily work.
