Quality Engineering Lead

Posted 6 days ago

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Morocco.

📋 Description

• Shift quality to the left effectively. Assist teams in identifying defects at the most cost-effective stage: during refinement and task definition, prior to any code being written. Participate in story-writing and design discussions, pose questions that reveal ambiguities and edge cases early, and guide teams in integrating testability and clear acceptance criteria from the outset.

• Elevate the entire testing pyramid. Collaborate with developers across all levels, from unit and integration tests to end-to-end and system testing. Aid them in crafting tests that are swift, reliable, and trustworthy; reconfigure suites that are top-heavy or unreliable; and define what to test at each level, and the rationale behind it.

• Optimize pipelines for speed and cost. Treat Continuous Integration as a product. Analyze and enhance pipeline definitions, eliminate unnecessary compute costs, sensibly parallelize and shard test execution, and reduce feedback loops so teams receive reliable signals in minutes rather than hours. Assist them in understanding the time and expenses their pipelines incur, and work to reduce both.

• Integrate AI into the quality toolkit. Help teams derive substantial benefits from AI-assisted development: generating and maintaining tests, speeding up code reviews, and shortening feedback loops, while maintaining a critical perspective on the output of these tools to ensure that quality and trust remain intact. You advocate for these tools and demonstrate effective usage to the teams.

• Mentor and empower. This is the core of the role. Collaborate with engineers, conduct workshops, review test code and pipeline modifications, and leave teams with an elevated quality standard that persists after your departure. Success is gauged by the improvement in the team's performance, not by your individual output.

• Lead quality strategy throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). Evaluate the current state of a team or program, agree on a practical improvement plan, and drive the execution of that plan: test strategy, environments and test data, release confidence, and the metrics that indicate whether quality is progressing positively.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive, hands-on quality experience spanning the entire testing pyramid, from unit tests to end-to-end and system testing, with well-founded opinions on the appropriate placement of each type.

• A solid understanding of coding. You can read and write code with ease, assess pull requests based on their merits, and gain the respect of senior developers by effectively communicating in their language.

• Genuine understanding of Agile delivery and practical application of shift-left: influencing quality during the definition and design phases, not just during testing.

• Strong CI expertise. You can dissect a pipeline, identify inefficiencies, and enhance it to be faster, cheaper, and more reliable. We care about your understanding of principles, even if tooling varies across clients; familiarity with tools like GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, or CircleCI is beneficial.

• Proficiency with a variety of testing tools, regardless of the technology stack. We work without bias towards specific tools and value transferable expertise over particular certifications. Examples include: Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium for end-to-end testing; Jest, Vitest, JUnit, or pytest for unit and integration testing; k6, JMeter, or Gatling for performance testing.

• A forward-thinking perspective on AI, supported by hands-on experience. You utilize AI-assisted development tools in your work, comprehend their benefits and limitations, and can guide a team in adopting them without compromising quality.

• Exceptional mentoring and communication abilities. You can educate, influence, and change a team's practices without formal authority, and you can engage with both client stakeholders and engineers alike.

• The seniority to quickly assess the quality standing of an unfamiliar team and build trust rapidly.
