QA Engineer – Mortgage

Posted Jun 21

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Conduct thorough testing of our user interfaces and workflows from start to finish by executing real loan scenarios within the product, as a processor, underwriter, or closer would, across various loan types and document conditions.

• Identify bugs before they reach our customers, including visual glitches, validation errors, workflow dead-ends, incorrect calculations, data persistence issues, integrations that fail to carry over fields, and the myriad of edge cases that only arise under actual mortgage conditions.

• Create clear and reproducible bug reports that detail the exact steps taken, the loan scenario involved, the expected versus actual behavior, and include screenshots or recordings, enabling engineers to resolve issues without needing further clarification.

• Develop and maintain the regression test suite, consisting of a curated selection of manual test cases and lightweight automated scripts (using Playwright, Cypress, or similar tools) that address our core workflows and evolve alongside the product.

• Manage release readiness by conducting pre-release verifications for every significant change, approving what is ready for deployment, and identifying what is not.

• Collaborate directly with Engineering and Product teams by participating in design reviews, posing the "but what happens when…" questions early on, and assisting in shaping features to ensure they are testable and accurate from the outset.

• Establish the playbook, which includes QA standard operating procedures (SOPs), bug severity classifications, release checklists, and quality metrics for future team members to adhere to.

• Recruit, train, and lead the QA team, with the goal of managing the function and guiding Loancrate’s approach to software quality within 12-18 months.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in mortgage operations, including processing, underwriting, closing, post-closing, quality control, or similar roles. You are familiar with the 1003 form and can identify discrepancies between the screen and the loan file.

• Practical experience with a loan origination system (such as Encompass, Empower, Byte, etc.) — you have extensive hands-on knowledge of these systems and understand their limitations.

• Background in QA or software testing, including manual test design, exploratory testing, regression suites, and release verification. Experience in a regulated or financial software environment is a plus.

• Familiarity with light test automation — while you don’t need to be a software engineer, you should be open to writing and maintaining simple scripts in Playwright, Cypress, or Selenium (or be able to learn quickly).

• Strong attention to detail — this role rewards those who thrive on catching subtle errors and do not overlook them.

• Excellent written communication skills — the bug reports, test plans, and checklists you create must be precise and user-friendly, as they will be utilized by others.

• Ability to work with structured data and developer tools, including reading JSON, inspecting API responses, using browser development tools, and navigating logs. Coding skills are not required, but comfort with these tools is essential.

• Process-oriented mindset — you recognize patterns in bugs and inherently seek to systematize their detection for future occurrences.

• Interest in AI and its impact on mortgage workflows — while a machine learning background is not necessary, you should be enthusiastic about collaborating with those who do and considering how to test AI-driven features.

• Prior experience in team leadership, training, or writing SOPs, including onboarding new hires, conducting calibration sessions, or developing QA programs from the ground up.

🏝️ Benefits

• Comprehensive medical coverage with 100% of employee and family premiums covered.

• Vision and dental insurance.

• 401(k) plan.

• Health Savings Account (HSA) / Flexible Spending Account (FSA).

• Access to a lender partner's employee loan program.

• Remote-first work culture — perform your best work from wherever suits you.

• Flexible time off policy — we trust you to manage your own time effectively.
