This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Minnesota.
• Take ownership of product design from start to finish across all platform surfaces, including workflow designer, form builder, administration, case management, e-signature systems, dashboards, and reporting.
• Streamline complex systems that involve multi-stage workflows with conditional routing, role-based permissions, and approval chains.
• Ensure that powerful features are accessible and user-friendly, not obscured.
• Design AI-enhanced experiences by determining how AI will interact with users, such as through intelligent recommendations, conversational interfaces, assisted configurations, and document intelligence.
• Address AI-specific UX challenges—such as trust, transparency, and graceful failure—with the backing of product and engineering teams.
• Lead UX research initiatives, overseeing usability testing and design validation while collaborating with product teams for extensive user discovery.
• Engage with agency staff and residents to comprehend constraints typically absent in consumer applications, including compliance, accessibility requirements, legacy integrations, and multi-tenant configurations.
• Establish and enhance the design practice by creating a design system, defining research and critique rhythms, and setting documentation standards.
• Leverage AI tools to expedite research, prototyping, and design workflows.
• Collaborate closely with engineering—eliminating handoff culture—by being part of the team from problem definition through to production.
• Utilize Figma, Cursor/Claude, and Lovable to maintain design pace in sync with engineering.
• Over 3 years of experience in designing intricate software products (SaaS, enterprise, or B2B).
• Solid understanding of UX fundamentals: information architecture, interaction design, prototyping, usability testing, visual design, and accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA, Section 508).
• Proven capability to transform ambiguous challenges from research to delivered, validated solutions.
• Familiarity with AI-integrated design workflows—actively using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, Figma AI, Cursor, Lovable, or similar) as essential resources rather than mere novelties, with the ability to articulate how AI influences your processes and outputs.
• A portfolio that showcases design decisions and their impact on users—highlighting how you defined problems, what was delivered, and the resulting changes for users.
• Clear and straightforward written communication—design choices articulated without jargon, with specifications that engineers can easily interpret.
• Strong indicators of experience designing for power users—software where individuals configure, customize, or create rather than merely consume content.
• Experience or interest in government, civic tech, legal technology, or other regulated and complex fields.
• Prior experience as a sole or founding designer in a setting where you thrived amidst ownership and ambiguity.
• Experience in building or significantly contributing to a design system.
• Proficient in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—sufficient knowledge to understand engineering limitations and design within those parameters.
• Experience in designing AI-driven features or a deep understanding of AI-specific UX challenges (trust, transparency, graceful failure).
• A product-oriented mindset—not just focused on design execution, but willing to challenge requirements when necessary.
• Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans, with substantial employer contributions for employees and their dependents (contributions based on base-level plan; buyup plans available at additional costs).
• Company-sponsored life insurance, short-term, and long-term disability insurance.
• 11 paid holidays.
• Flexible time-off policy.
• 401k plan featuring a 4% employer match.
• Monthly stipends to support home office expenses.
• Monthly wellness stipends.
