Principal Software Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Arizona, +2 more states.

📋 Description

• Oversee and strategically enhance high-throughput payment processing systems that manage real financial transactions in real time.

• Lead platform migration efforts, which include transitioning a core Windows C++ authorization gateway to Linux using Clang and Bazel.

• Create robust payment integrations with various third-party gateways such as Chase Paymentech, Barclays, HSBC, AMEX, Adyen, Braintree, Klarna, Shift4, and others.

• Break down legacy IPC frameworks into gRPC services, allowing payment components to be reused throughout the broader payments ecosystem — serving as a connection from maintenance to systems design.

• Develop and implement security-critical features that involve encryption, PCI compliance, and the handling of sensitive payment data.

• Enhance the performance of transaction processing pipelines, where latency significantly impacts customer purchase completion.

• Gradually transition legacy codebases towards modern C++ practices (such as RAII, ownership semantics, and safe string handling) without disrupting dependent payment flows.

• Design and execute comprehensive testing strategies, including unit tests, integration tests, and fuzz testing for security-sensitive components.

• Troubleshoot and resolve production issues in systems with intricate interdependencies and real operational demands.

• Collaborate with payment operations teams to introduce new payment methods and gateway providers.

• Ensure adherence to PCI-DSS and other financial industry standards.

• Participate in an on-call rotation for production payment system support.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 7 years of professional C++ development experience in production settings.

• Proficiency in modern C++.

• Strong grasp of systems programming, including memory management, concurrency, and performance optimization.

• Ability to understand undefined behavior and its practical implications across different platforms.

• A systematic approach to debugging methodologies.

• Familiarity with toolchains and cross-compilation issues.

• Expertise with build systems, with a strong preference for Bazel experience.

• Experience with legacy codebases older than 10 years — capable of understanding, respecting, and progressively modernizing existing systems.

• Experience in or a strong interest in payment processing or financial transaction systems.

• In-depth knowledge of security best practices.

• Proficiency with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude, Codex) accompanied by mature judgment.

• Understanding of HTTP/HTTPS protocols and RESTful API design.

• Experience working within Linux/Unix environments.

• Familiarity with Rust or a genuine interest in learning it.

• Experience with gRPC or familiarity with service decomposition from monolithic architectures.

• Payment gateway integration experience (e.g., Chase Paymentech, Braintree, Adyen, or similar).

• Knowledge and practical experience with PCI-DSS compliance.

• Experience with platform migrations (e.g., Windows to Linux, MSVC to Clang).

• Expertise in the Bazel build system.

• Experience in performance profiling.

• Familiarity with shared memory, IPC frameworks, or low-level concurrency primitives.

• Experience with Kafka or other event streaming platforms.

• Hands-on experience with OpenSSL/cryptographic libraries.

• Familiarity with AI-powered code review and static analysis tools.

• Awareness of security considerations when utilizing AI tools with legacy or inadequately documented systems.
