Principal Product Designer, Devices

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Lead comprehensive design initiatives across Life360's portfolio of devices, which includes Tile, Pet GPS, and various hardware products. This position translates insights and strategies into refined, scalable experiences that encompass both physical and digital interactions.

• Gain a profound understanding of the devices ecosystem, hardware limitations, companion app interactions, and user mental models, designing experiences that provide a seamless transition whether a member is using the Life360 app, the web platform, or engaging with a physical device.

• Oversee the in-app experience, focusing on how users set up, manage, and derive value from their devices within the Life360 ecosystem.

• Spearhead early-stage design by swiftly prototyping hardware-software interaction concepts utilizing both AI-native and standard design tools to rapidly test innovative experiences.

• Outline and visualize end-to-end user journeys across both physical and digital interactions — from unboxing to daily usage — creating visual artifacts that stakeholders can promptly evaluate.

• Create frameworks and interaction models that minimize friction throughout device setup, management, and troubleshooting processes.

• Develop scalable patterns that harmonize the devices experience across various form factors and surface areas.

• Collaborate with teams from Product, Engineering, Brand, Research, Hardware, and Industrial Design to achieve high-quality results and influence strategy through a robust design perspective.

• Present insights and solutions at both individual contributor and executive levels that inform the devices roadmap and business strategy.

• Provide guidance and mentorship to fellow designers, exemplifying exceptional craft, curiosity, and collaboration across functions.

• Advocate for design culture and innovation by drawing inspiration from consumer hardware, IoT, and connected product domains.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 10 years of experience in designing for mobile-first, consumer-facing products — preferably encompassing hardware companion apps, IoT, or connected device ecosystems.

• Proven experience in designing across both physical and digital touchpoints, with a solid understanding of how hardware constraints influence software UX decisions.

• Knowledge of device lifecycle moments — including unboxing, onboarding, setup, troubleshooting, and ongoing engagement — and the ability to design for each with clarity and delight.

• Strong UI/UX capabilities with a portfolio showcasing elegant, data-informed solutions to complex cross-platform or hardware-software challenges.

• Experience in designing for AI-enhanced experiences, particularly within the context of ambient, location-aware, or sensor-driven products.

• Proficient in rapid prototyping, with a tendency toward exploration and iteration, demonstrating a successful track record of bridging the gap between concept and scalable, market-ready products.

• Familiarity with design partner programs or continuous feedback systems involving early access customers, hardware betas, or device pilot initiatives is a plus.

• Excellent communication and storytelling skills, capable of translating technical hardware realities into engaging user-centered narratives and influencing across various functions and levels.

• A systems thinker with a demonstrated history of creating scalable frameworks that function across different form factors, platforms, and product lines.
