Principal Platform Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Actively enhance platform capabilities: design and deliver essential platform services from architecture through to production and ongoing operations, creating self-service functionalities that operating-company engineers can adopt with minimal effort.

• Guide the platform's architecture and standards, influencing the reference architecture, optimal pathways, and established protocols, and translating engineering standards into actionable guidance through the Architecture Council.

• Promote AI-driven software delivery by developing and refining templates, pipelines, and optimal pathways that increase developer productivity and expand the platform into shared services that support new software initiatives.

• Take ownership of the reliability, security, and costs associated with the services you create: establish SLIs and SLOs, implement observability, manage incident response, and decrease manual efforts through automation, with security and cost considerations integrated from the outset.

• Set high technical standards and provide mentorship: elevate the skills of platform and operating-company engineers through active engineering involvement, code reviews, and guidance, while fostering a connected engineering community across the portfolio.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 15 years of experience in platform disciplines including platform engineering, cloud technologies, DevOps, SRE, and software engineering, with substantial hands-on experience in building and managing services utilized by multiple teams or business units.

• Practical experience in developing internal developer platforms and shared services used by numerous teams or business units (self-service, optimal pathways, API versioning, and backward compatibility), with a platform-as-product approach that prioritizes engineers as customers and minimizes their cognitive load.

• Strong, up-to-date hands-on knowledge of AWS (or Azure/GCP): including containers and Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi, or similar), and solid understanding of networking, identity management, security posture, and cost management.

• Extensive hands-on experience with CI/CD and GitOps, including building and managing delivery pipelines and environment automation, and enhancing the developer experience for safe and rapid change deployment.

• Experience in production ownership: SLIs and SLOs, error budgets, observability, incident response, capacity planning, and reducing toil through automation.

• An outstanding engineer with a keen design sensibility (API contracts, clean abstractions, separation of concerns) who develops production services as robust products and remains actively engaged with the code. Proficient in at least one modern backend language (Go, Python, TypeScript, or similar) with sound judgment on build-vs-buy decisions.

• Practical cloud-native security expertise (IAM, OAuth/OIDC, secrets and workload identity, certificate lifecycle management, policy-as-code, and secure software supply chain), with a proven history of creating secure-by-default platforms.

• A history of shaping reference architectures, optimal pathways, and engineering standards that are adopted by other teams, transforming them into actionable guidance rather than mere documentation.

• Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development and intelligent coding workflows (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar), capable of defining best practices and guidelines, and influencing how these tools affect delivery, code quality, and team dynamics.

• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, capable of building trust across organizational boundaries, aligning engineers across operating companies, and providing mentorship without relying on positional authority.
