Principal Performance Engineer, Database & AI Benchmarking

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in India.

📋 Description

• Design and execute benchmarks: Create and sustain repeatable end-to-end benchmarks for database and AI workloads.

• Database performance analysis: Assess throughput, latency, concurrency, scalability, and stability across OLTP/OLAP and mixed workloads.

• AI performance evaluation: Measure and enhance performance for GPU/CPU inference pipelines, model serving, and data/feature pipelines; evaluate cost/performance trade-offs.

• Tool development and automation: Create harnesses, scripts, dashboards, and reproducible environments to ensure consistent benchmarking.

• Reporting and analysis: Generate clear reports, pinpoint bottlenecks, and suggest improvements.

• Collaboration across teams: Work with database engineers, AI engineers, field teams, and product management to set performance objectives and acceptance criteria.

• Establishing performance standards: Set benchmarks for test hygiene, statistical rigor, hardware normalization, and overall benchmark governance.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in performance engineering, benchmarking, SRE, or systems engineering (with a focus on database and/or AI systems).

• Deep understanding of performance principles and stochastic modeling: including latency percentiles, tail behavior, throughput, concurrency, queuing, saturation, and capacity planning.

• Comprehensive knowledge of database internals (such as Postgres or similar databases).

• Practical experience in benchmarking databases and/or distributed systems (e.g., Postgres or equivalents).

• Familiarity with benchmarking tools and harnesses (for instance: pgbench, HammerDB, TPC-like workloads, and custom harnesses).

• Proficient in Python and/or Go for automation and data analysis, along with strong scripting capabilities (Bash) and eBPF skills.

• Experience with Linux performance profiling tools (e.g., perf, flamegraphs, strace, iostat, vmstat).

• Strong communication skills to convey findings clearly and drive performance enhancements with engineering teams.
