Principal Investigator – Senior Research Epidemiologist/Biostatistician

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in North Carolina.

📋 Description

• Acts as the primary project leader responsible for coordinating multi-site clinical research projects, which include randomized clinical trials.

• Provides high-level leadership for both operational and scientific components of the project, encompassing study/trial design, protocol formulation, study execution, site monitoring, quality assurance, data analysis, and presentation of research findings.

• Often participates as a member of a research network steering committee and serves as the main contact with the funding agency/client as well as the Data and Safety Monitoring Board.

• Directs and supports multi-disciplinary project teams in the operational facets of the coordinating center, including data management and possibly clinical center subawards.

• Ensures effective communication with funding officials, study site leadership, collaborators from academic institutions and other organizations, central laboratories, clinical centers, and other specialized core facilities such as specimen storage or imaging.

• Operates as the highest point of escalation within a project, such as the coordinating center and/or research team.

• Manages contractual and financial elements of the Coordinating Center (e.g., ensuring timely reporting and deliverables, maintaining an appropriate staff composition for all project activities).

• Drives business and proposal development efforts for grant, cooperative agreement, and contract opportunities, including supplemental funding and other growth avenues.

• Oversees the creation of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and provides mentorship to junior investigators on manuscript preparation and scientific presentations.

• Represents research findings at scientific conferences.

• Monitors the overall process and quality of studies and/or activities.

• Responsible for compliance with project budget, timeline/schedule, and contractual obligations.

• Plays a leadership role in strategic planning, business development, including the preparation and leadership of proposals, and mentoring staff.


⛳️ Requirements

• A doctorate in epidemiology, statistics, biostatistics, or a related discipline, along with a minimum of 12 years of experience in multi-center clinical research, including randomized clinical trials.

• A proven history of successfully leading or co-leading large, complex public health research initiatives, particularly multi-site coordinating centers.

• Strong preference for experience in securing funding and leading National Institutes of Health and other federally-funded research projects.

• Evidence of leadership in fostering a climate that promotes growth in research funding, staff capabilities, and scientific excellence and reputation.

• A focus in 1-2 research areas related to chronic or acquired health conditions, supported by leadership experience and an appropriate record of scientific standing is preferred.

• Experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams that include senior, mid-level, and early-career researchers, statisticians, data managers, technologists, and research coordinators/project managers.

• Experience in managing FDA-regulated trials, including studies for new drugs and devices, is advantageous.

• A documented record of scientific achievement in the presentation and publication of study results in peer-reviewed journals and other platforms.

• Familiarity with business development and working with clients who fund public health research, including federal agencies, private foundations, and/or the commercial sector.

• Experience with domestic/international sites, data sharing, and data utilization is beneficial.

• Experience with artificial intelligence/machine learning methodologies is a plus.

• Strong communication, negotiation, compromise, and consensus-building skills across diverse groups.

• Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and should not require, now or in the future, sponsorship for employment visa status.
