This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Protection & Control at Qualus, delivering technical governance across various projects and programs.

• Establish and maintain the philosophy, standards, and best practices for protection, control, and metering in high voltage substations.

• Act as Principal Engineer or Technical Authority on intricate, high-risk, or non-standard projects, providing final technical approval and guidance.

• Review and authorize: -Protection planning, philosophy, and application documents -One-lines, schematics, logic diagrams, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.

• Supervise protection coordination studies and relay settings for utility transmission systems, including the assessment and validation of work executed by others.

• Lead or take part in senior-level design reviews, hazard and risk assessments, and investigations of near misses.

• Assist with Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), Site Acceptance Tests (SATs), and critical field inspections for complex installations.

• Guide project teams on construction sequencing, outage planning, and commissioning strategies.

• Engage in client technical, Safety by Design, and constructability review meetings.

• Offer technical oversight for project scopes, feasibility analyses, cost estimations, and definition-phase deliverables, including the examination of assumptions and risks.

• Contribute to Business Development by providing technical strategy, execution methods, and risk assessments for proposals and pursuits.

• Serve as a primary technical escalation point for clients, internal teams, and external partners.

• Mentor both senior and junior engineers, playing a pivotal role in the ongoing enhancement of P&C standards, tools, and engineering practices.


⛳️ Requirements

• Over 20 years of engineering experience in utility-focused protection, control, and metering, with proven system-level accountability.

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.

• Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Canada or eligibility to obtain (U.S. PE is an advantage).

• Established expertise in substation protection philosophy, encompassing transmission line, transformer, bus, and feeder protection.

• Significant experience in reviewing and approving detailed P&C design drawings and technical deliverables.

• Experience in conducting protection coordination studies and relay settings for high-voltage transmission systems.

• Proficient knowledge of protection software and platforms such as ASPEN, CAPE, EasyPower, SKM, and SEL / GE relay families.

• Practical experience with substation construction, commissioning, outage planning, and operational interfaces.

• Proven capability to provide technical judgment on non-standard, complex, or pioneering applications.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Experience with EPC projects and familiarity with utility maintenance and operational practices are considered significant assets.

• Demonstrated ability to mentor others.
