Principal Engineer – Power Uprate Projects

Posted 1 day ago

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Wisconsin.

📋 Description

• Oversee engineering initiatives for plant Power Uprate projects, which encompass feasibility assessments, system analyses, and comprehensive design.

• Serve as the principal technical authority on Power Uprate strategies, methodologies, and the impacts on systems.

• Mentor and guide engineering personnel in the analysis and modeling of electrical systems.

• Conduct and supervise detailed calculations for electrical power systems, including: Load flow (power flow) analysis, Short circuit and fault current assessments, Arc flash hazard evaluations, Motor starting and dynamic system evaluations, and Protective device coordination studies.

• Assess the capacity and limitations of electrical systems to accommodate Power Uprate conditions.

• Analyze the effects of increased generation on: Switchgear ratings, Transformers, Transmission interconnections, and Auxiliary power systems.

• Ensure all calculations align with relevant codes and standards (IEEE, NFPA 70E, NEC, NERC, etc.).

• Create, maintain, and validate ETAP models (or equivalent power system software) for the plant's electrical systems.

• Utilize ETAP to simulate Power Uprate scenarios and evaluate system performance under normal, contingency, and transient conditions.

• Guarantee model accuracy through field data validation, system inspections, and configuration management.

• Generate and review reports based on ETAP to support engineering decisions, regulatory submissions, and design modifications.

• Develop and evaluate engineering calculations, analyses, and design changes related to Power Uprate implementation.

• Assist in project planning, scheduling, and risk management tasks.

• Ensure projects are completed within the designated timeframe, budget, and scope requirements.

• Maintain auditable engineering documentation and calculations.

• Collaborate with operations, maintenance, transmission planning, and design engineering teams.

• Facilitate outage planning and execution for modifications to the electrical system.

• Engage with vendors, consultants, and external engineering firms for specialized studies.

• Evaluate plant systems (thermal, electrical, mechanical, instrumentation & control) for their capability and constraints regarding Power Uprate.

• Identify necessary upgrades or modifications to facilitate increased output.

• Conduct or supervise system performance modeling and integration analyses across different departments.

• Ensure compliance of all Power Uprate activities with applicable regulatory requirements (e.g., NRC, FERC, NERC, IEEE standards).

• Prepare and support licensing submissions, technical documentation, and responses to regulatory inquiries.

• Identify technical risks related to Power Uprate and electrical system modifications and formulate mitigation strategies.

• Ensure adherence to electrical safety standards, including arc flash and protection studies.

• Foster a strong safety culture and maintain engineering rigor.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related engineering field.

• Over 8 years of engineering experience in power generation, utilities, or heavy industry.

• Proven experience conducting power system studies and electrical calculations.

• Practical experience with ETAP (or equivalent tools such as SKM, PSCAD, PowerWorld, etc.).

• In-depth knowledge of electrical distribution systems and grid interconnections in plants.

• Leadership experience in managing complex technical projects.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred or the ability to obtain one.

• Experience in supporting plant Power Uprates or significant capacity modifications.

• Expertise in arc flash, protection coordination, and short circuit analysis.

• Familiarity with nuclear or large fossil/hydro generation environments.

• Knowledge of regulatory requirements affecting electrical systems (NERC compliance, licensing).

• Advanced analytical capabilities in power system modeling and simulation.

• Proficiency in ETAP or similar electrical analysis platforms.

• Strong technical writing and documentation skills.

• Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams.
