Principal Engineer, Payments

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colombia.

📋 Description

• Define the technical trajectory of Masabi’s payments platform by contributing to its architecture, standards, and engineering best practices.

• Create and implement scalable, secure, resilient, and cost-efficient payment solutions that align with Masabi’s platform vision.

• Assist teams in transitioning to a modern, microservices-based architecture while balancing immediate delivery needs with the long-term health of the platform.

• Stay actively involved in technical delivery through architecture reviews, design discussions, and targeted hands-on contributions when necessary.

• Recognize and address complex technical challenges related to scalability, resilience, operational performance, and system evolution.

• Serve as a senior technical advisor across engineering teams, guiding and influencing technical decisions, especially within the payments domain.

• Collaborate with external providers and payment partners on integrations, ensuring technical alignment and effective problem-solving.

• Contribute to technical roadmap planning, prioritization, technical scoping, and architecture discussions for intricate initiatives.

• Generate clear technical documentation and support engineering standards, technical forums, and best practices throughout the organization.

⛳️ Requirements

• Extensive experience with payment systems, including integrations with PSPs, gateways, or acquirers.

• Solid understanding of payment flows, transaction lifecycles, and system design considerations.

• Expertise in designing and evolving distributed systems and microservices architectures.

• Experience operating at the Principal or Staff level, shaping technical direction across multiple teams or domains.

• Strong judgement to balance immediate deliverables with long-term architectural outcomes.

• Ability to navigate ambiguity and translate complex problems into clear, actionable technical strategies.

• Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging both technical and non-technical audiences.

• Willingness to be hands-on when necessary, while maintaining a focus on system-level impact.

• Significant experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and modern infrastructure practices.

• Experience with systems where scale, reliability, performance, and cost trade-offs are critical, with the ability to navigate these decisions thoughtfully.

• Involvement in establishing engineering standards, architecture patterns, or platform direction.

• Interest in or exposure to AI-enabled systems, particularly with insights into architectural implications in production.
