Principal Engineer

📋 Description

• In the position of Principal Engineer, you will contribute to shaping the engineering vision and serve as the bridge between strategic goals and scalable implementation.

• This role will lead the technical vision and engineering strategy across enterprise engineering platforms by creating the "paved path," with a particular emphasis on developer experience, platform observability, and design and content enablement utilized by the QMARS team.

• Our team is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the software at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that supports the Quality Management and Review Systems (QMARS) program. The QMARS online case management system underpins the CMS Beneficiary and Family-Centered Care (BFCC) Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) program, one of the largest federal initiatives aimed at improving healthcare quality for Medicare beneficiaries nationwide.

• Our teams are dedicated to modernizing these systems while enhancing them in ways that alleviate provider burden and reduce costs for CMS. We achieve this through Human-Centered Design (HCD) and Service Design practices, product-focused thinking, and proficient engineering. • Proficiency in AWS CDK and CloudFormation.

• Experience with AWS services (API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, SQS, SNS).

• Knowledge of VPN (subnets, IP addressing, routing, etc.).

• Familiarity with Networking and Routing (Route53 and general DNS troubleshooting, e.g., nslookup, A records, CNAME records, etc.).

• Experience with AWS EKS and Kubernetes.

• Willingness to acquire knowledge of new services.

• A "DevSecOps" security mindset (shift left security).

• Familiarity with AWS ECS/ECR, Lambda, EC2, Step Functions (nice to haves).

• Experience with monitoring tools like AWS CloudWatch, DataDog, PagerDuty (nice to haves).

• Familiarity with deployment tools such as AWS CodePipeline, Jenkins, GitHub Actions (nice to haves).

• Understanding of security groups and IAM Roles (nice to haves).

• A proactive individual who seeks out problems to solve rather than waiting for assignments.
