Principal Consulting Epidemiologist

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Initiate, cultivate, and enhance client relationships within the legal, corporate, and regulatory fields.

• Sustain and expand a transferable book of business, aiding in achieving practice revenue goals.

• Drive business development initiatives, encompassing opportunity identification, project scoping, pricing strategies, and proposal creation.

• Collaborate with interdisciplinary experts (toxicology, industrial hygiene, environmental science, economics) to provide integrated solutions for clients.

• Act as a consulting and testifying expert in litigation, arbitration, and regulatory proceedings.

• Prepare and present expert reports, depositions, and oral testimonies.

• Simplify complex epidemiologic findings into clear, defensible, and convincing insights for legal representatives, regulators, and executive stakeholders.

• Assist in high-profile and sensitive cases, including mass torts, environmental exposure issues, and workplace health disputes.

• Oversee and manage intricate, multi-disciplinary epidemiological projects.

• Design and supervise study protocols, which include exposure assessments, outcome definitions, and causal inference methodologies.

• Guarantee stringent QA/QC processes throughout all analyses and deliverables.

• Supervise project teams, schedules, budgets, and client expectations in a consulting framework.

• Utilize advanced epidemiological methodologies, such as cohort and case-control studies, time-series and longitudinal analyses, meta-analyses and systematic reviews, as well as survival and sensitivity analyses, including causal inference techniques.

• Employ statistical and analytical software like R, Python, SAS, or Stata to produce defensible, litigation-ready outputs.

• Critically assess external studies and literature to bolster expert opinions and counterarguments.

• Mentor and develop junior consultants and analysts within the Health Sciences team.

• Contribute to thought leadership through publications, conference presentations, and client briefings.

• Support market-entry initiatives and enhance J.S. Held’s presence in expert services and advisory sectors.

• Assist in shaping and expanding the firm’s epidemiology and health risk capabilities on a global scale.

⛳️ Requirements

• Doctoral degree (PhD, ScD, or DrPH) in Epidemiology from a regionally accredited, research-focused (non-profit) university.

• Approximately 15+ years of client-facing consulting experience post-graduation, providing epidemiological analyses within litigation, regulatory, or risk management contexts.

• Proven seller-doer history, including a transferable book of business and consistent achievements against annual revenue and origination objectives.

• Established experience as an expert witness, including authoring expert reports and participating in depositions and/or courtroom testimonies, with the capability to perform effectively under cross-examination.

• Advanced proficiency in epidemiologic methods and strong command of statistical tools (e.g., R, Python, SAS, SPSS, or Stata), with the ability to lead technical teams and direct analytical workflows.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with the capacity to clearly articulate complex methodologies and findings to attorneys, regulators, and senior business leaders.
