Part-Time Freelance Reporter, US News & Crime

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Accountable for producing original, enterprise-level, and investigative journalism.

• Must respond to breaking news within the assigned beat and deliver accurate stories under tight deadlines.

• Capacity to travel to breaking news locations on short notice.

• Consistently generate stories that include original video, interviews, photographs, and graphic elements.

• The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive network of contacts in the criminal, legal, and law enforcement sectors.

• Propose story ideas on a daily basis as well as carry out assignments, including field assignments.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience in a professional newsroom environment.

• Background in covering US and WORLD news at a national media outlet, with a preference for digital experience.

• Familiarity with crime, courts, legal matters, and investigative reporting.

• Understanding of AP style writing.

• Proficient in PACER, Lexis-Nexis, and FOIA requests.

• Knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO).

• Experience with digital analytics to track and enhance traffic.

• Proficient in headline content management systems, with knowledge of WordPress.

• Willingness to travel both domestically and internationally.

• A competitive spirit is essential.

• Must possess an “on-call” mentality and be ready to work outside of regular hours in emergency or breaking news situations.

• Capability to travel and operate effectively in the field.

• Eager to network beyond the office environment.

• A strong consumer of news.

• A Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field of study is preferred, or equivalent professional experience.

• Ability to utilize AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, NotebookLM) to enhance research, fact-finding, and story development in a rapidly evolving news cycle.
