This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• The Coding Services department assigns diagnosis and procedural codes to both inpatient and outpatient medical records to support reimbursement and data collection for the various business units within the OSU Health System.
• This role involves coding medical records and additional documents upon the conclusion of a patient’s visit.
• Responsibilities include selecting the appropriate admitting diagnosis, principal and secondary diagnoses, as well as principal and secondary procedures; accurately assigning ICD-10 and/or CPT-4 codes; sequencing the diagnosis and procedure codes; and abstracting data such as admission source, type, disposition, and the admitting, attending, and procedure attending physicians.
• Codes are chosen using the Computer Assisted Coding/Encoder Software after reviewing details in the electronic medical record system, IHIS.
• The information that is abstracted and coded is interfaced with the IHIS Resolute Billing system.
• This team member is accountable for addressing all edits throughout the coding and abstracting process to ensure complete and accurate coding, as well as MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment for hospital reimbursement.
• The staff member will uphold productivity and quality standards established for the department, maintain an approved work schedule, and submit a weekly volume log.
• A minimum of a CAHIIM approved coding certificate program or HIMT program, or equivalent education and experience is required.
• Proven coding proficiency demonstrated through successful completion of OSUWMC’s coding test.
• Familiarity with or experience in computer-assisted coding and/or automated encoders is preferred.
• An Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management and at least 1 year of outpatient coding experience that encompasses service lines such as cancer, transplant, obstetrics, rehabilitation, and cardiology.
• For promotion: capability to code at least 3 of the 5 inpatient service locations.
• Alternatively: 3 years of acute care academic medical center outpatient coding experience within an academic Health Information Management department (must include service lines of cancer, transplant, obstetrics, rehabilitation, and cardiology).
• For promotion: ability to code at least 3 of the 5 outpatient service locations.
• Must hold a credential as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from the American Health Information Management Association.
• Outpatient certifications required include RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or COC (outpatient credential only).
• Ongoing: Must maintain continuing education requirements as set by the American Health Information Management Association or AAPC.
