Outpatient Coding Specialist I

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ohio.

📋 Description

• Accountable for the precise and timely coding of outpatient and professional medical records in accordance with established coding practices, CMS regulations, and hospital protocols.

• Evaluates all types of encounters and accurately assigns codes for diagnostic and procedural information while adhering to coding guidelines and regulatory requirements, including facility-specific protocols and federal regulations.

• Responsible for the accurate coding of hospital ancillary services, emergency department visits, same-day surgeries, observation services, and/or professional physician service encounters.

• Maintains productivity and quality metrics in line with established benchmarks.

• Ensures optimal assessment of CPT, ASC, APC, and APG codes.

• Possesses the knowledge and ability to address coding-specific edits such as CCI, LCD, NCD, and MUE.

• Operates within UH billing timelines.

• Keeps coding knowledge and skills current through written resources, clinical information, and educational webinars.

• Stays informed of guidelines and regulations impacting the UHHS Coding Department.

• Maintains up-to-date professional credentials.

• Adheres to the ethical coding standards set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).

• Engages in educational and informational initiatives.

• Performs additional duties as assigned.

• Complies with all relevant policies and standards.

⛳️ Requirements

• High School Equivalent / GED (Required)

• Associate's Degree in Health Information Management (Preferred) or Bachelor's Degree (Preferred)

• Minimum of 1 year of ICD-10-CM and/or CPT coding experience (Preferred)

• Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology. (Required proficiency)

• Detail-oriented, organized, with excellent time-management and strong analytical and problem-solving skills. (Required proficiency)

• Strong client service, communication, presentation, and relationship-building abilities. (Required proficiency)

• Capable of working independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, demanding environment. (Required proficiency)

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills. (Required proficiency)

• Demonstrated proficiency in using PCs, Microsoft Office suite, and general office equipment (e.g., printers, copy machines, FAX machines, etc.), and the ability to work effectively with multiple systems. (Required proficiency)

• Must possess one of the following certifications upon hire: Certified Professional Coder (CPC), CPC-A, CPC-H, CPC-P, Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), CCS-P, Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Radiology Coding Certification (RCC), Radiation Oncology Certified Coder (ROCC), or Certified Hematology and Oncology Coder (CHONC).
