• Manage the U.S. news desk during peak coverage periods, making final decisions on framing, prioritization, and content play.
• Clearly differentiate between stories that enhance public understanding and those that simply follow trends.
• Rapidly eliminate weak or redundant stories, insisting on superior replacements.
• Provide exceptional framing for the most competitive national stories, identifying areas where Newsweek can contribute clarity, originality, or analytical depth.
• Rewrite confidently: leads, nut graphs, headlines, structure, sourcing, and tone.
• Transform raw field notes, transcripts, interviews, and exclusives into polished, analytical, and well-argued journalism.
• Execute quick second-day and rolling rewrites that significantly enhance stories as facts develop.
• Step in as a desk reporter when necessary—making calls, verifying facts, pursuing documents, and closing information gaps.
• Personally engage in high-stakes or sensitive stories where accuracy and judgment are essential.
• Uphold elite newsroom standards for yourself and your team.
• Offer candid, constructive feedback and expect improvement.
• Mentor reporters and junior editors to become sharper thinkers and more capable journalists.
• Take responsibility when coverage falls short of expectations.
• Maintain a sophisticated comprehension of how discerning readers interact with news.
• Collaborate with audience teams to align performance goals with editorial ambitions.

• 7–10+ years of experience in a high-level U.S. digital newsroom.
• Proven track record in editing breaking news, exclusives, and enterprise reporting swiftly.
