This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in California, +1 more state.
• Assist in build activities, encompassing design, configuration, deployment, and migration within extensive optical networks that cover long-haul terrestrial and regional metropolitan areas. This includes interconnecting Data Centers and Points of Presence (POP) globally.
• Strategize, schedule, and execute complex deployments and migrations of optical and backbone networks. Conduct maintenance, upgrades, and provisioning of new circuits or services.
• Collaborate closely with NOC, field technicians, vendors, and engineering teams to troubleshoot faults and perform root cause analysis. Address and resolve issues relating to optical transport equipment and network connectivity.
• Uphold standards for all build and design packages for metro, regional, and long-haul DWDM systems.
• Keep network documentation current, including fiber routes, equipment inventory, and change logs.
• Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to network emergencies outside of regular hours.
• Develop implementation plans and offer technical leadership and guidance throughout deployment activities.
• Review and maintain acceptance documents provided by vendors and subcontractors responsible for deploying equipment on our network.
• Offer technical expertise to network provisioning engineers for troubleshooting out-of-service or malfunctioning circuits.
• Actively contribute to the evolution of documentation, automation, and processes.
• Support various stakeholder organizations by understanding, anticipating, and influencing business outcomes.
• Demonstrate proactive communication and maintain a product and customer-focused mindset.
• Utilize a data-driven approach to impact business and network health metrics.
• Generate and evaluate network performance reports to proactively identify areas for enhancement.
• Travel may be required on an as-needed basis, potentially up to 50%.
• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in live network deployment, migration, and operations.
• Proven hands-on experience in deploying and migrating optical networks.
• Familiarity with optical network design, installation, and maintenance for service providers or enterprise networks.
• Experience with optical transport systems and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of optical fiber types, fiber characterization, and OTDR.
• Proficient in optical technologies such as DWDM, CWDM, ROADM, OTN, SONET/SDH, and Ethernet over fiber.
• Experience with individual components of optical networks, including Transponders, Mux/Demux, WSS, EDFA, RAMAN, OSC, and OTDR.
• Field experience in POPs, carrier hotels, data centers, and Central Office environments.
• Proficient with optical test equipment and troubleshooting using OTDR, OSA, BERT, and optical power meters.
• Familiarity with network management tools (e.g., Ciena OneControl, Infinera DNA, Nokia NFM-T).
• Experience in data center network design.
• Skills in automation/scripting (Python, Ansible) within a networking context, including creating, troubleshooting, and analyzing network code.
