This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Maryland.
• Work in collaboration with meteorologists at NCEP, NWS field offices, academic institutions, and external partners to create forecasting tools aimed at short to medium-range hazardous weather conditions.
• Leverage scientific and technical meteorological knowledge to create tools that assist in hazard information determination.
• As suitable, contribute to formal scientific publications and participate in off-site conferences, symposia, and outreach events related to hazardous weather.
• Collaborate on transitioning forecaster tools developed at WPC and other NOAA locations into operational use at WPC and additional NOAA offices.
• Develop web applications utilizing contemporary industry languages and tools, including GIS, Python, and PHP.
• Create training materials to facilitate the integration of new tools and techniques into operational processes.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.
• Design and train machine learning models to detect precursors to severe weather events.
• Implement AI-driven anomaly detection systems to recognize errors or gaps in real-time forecast data.
• A degree in meteorology, hydrology, or a related scientific field (BS required, MS or higher preferred).
• Experience utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for analyzing and modeling complex environmental or meteorological datasets.
• Background in software development support within a collaborative team environment.
• Proficient in Python and Unix shell scripting in a UNIX/Linux environment.
• Understanding of deterministic and ensemble prediction system datasets and their application in hazardous weather diagnosis and forecasting.
• Familiarity with short to medium-range weather forecasting.
• Ability to plan, organize, and complete projects effectively.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for documentation and presentations.
• Capacity to support team initiatives, show respect for colleagues, and work toward team consensus.
• Experience with development frameworks for web-based mapping applications (e.g., ArcGIS, JavaScript, API).
• Proficient in data science frameworks and libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Scikit-learn, with experience in deep learning applications for weather prediction.
