This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +25 more states.
• Precisely assigns diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient facilities and professional services.
• Executes necessary functions within MHS GENESIS and various military coding systems.
• Accurately allocates Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD-CM diagnoses, CPT and HCPCS, modifiers, and quantities based on medical record documentation.
• Reviews encounter and/or record documentation to identify and rectify inconsistencies, ambiguities, or discrepancies.
• Assigns precise codes based on provider responses to coding inquiries.
• Promotes DHA coding compliance by conducting due diligence in ethically and correctly researching and/or interpreting existing guidelines.
• Utilizes MHS computer systems to remotely access patient records and assign codes for patient encounters in support of other MTFs.
• Achieves and maintains DHA coding productivity and accuracy standards for this role.
• Educates and offers feedback to providers and clinical staff to address documentation issues and support coding compliance.
• Serves as a reference point for medical staff with questions, issues, or concerns regarding coding.
• Responds to provider inquiries and provides examples of suitable coding and documentation references.
• Four (4) years of experience in medical coding and/or auditing across two (2) or more medical, surgical, and ancillary specialties within the last 10 years.
• At least two (2) years of medical coding or auditing experience if that experience was obtained in an MTF.
• A minimum of one (1) year of documented performance in the specialty is necessary to be considered qualifying.
• Completion of ONE of the following: Associate's Degree or higher in Health Information, Healthcare Administration, or Biological Science.
• University Certificate in medical coding.
• At least 30 semester hours of university/college credit that includes relevant coursework such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, or pharmacology.
• Successful completion of AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preparation course for professional services or facility coding that includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health information management concepts, and pharmacology.
• Successful completion of a training course beyond the apprentice level for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training, obtained in a training program conducted by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision.
• Certification: ONE of the following recognized professional coding certifications: CPC, RHIT, RHIA, CCS-P AND ONE of the following recognized institutional coding certifications: CCS, RHIA, RHIT, COC.
• Medical Coding Test: minimum passing score of 80%.
• Flexible scheduling.
• Up to 40 hours per week.
