This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in New York.
• Acts as a proficient coder, performing abstraction and comprehensive analysis of various medical documents while assigning suitable procedural terminology and medical codes in line with applicable coding standards and policies.
• Analyzes, inputs, and manages database information.
• Addresses or clarifies internal inquiries regarding medical data.
• Utilizes extensive knowledge of coding systems and their logic to assess codes generated by electronic charge capture and/or assigns codes based on medical record documentation in accordance with universally acknowledged coding guidelines.
• Examines and resolves coding denials.
• Troubleshoots issues with claims containing errors due to incorrect coding and offers feedback for amendments and follow-up.
• Extracts data and verifies the accuracy of codes.
• Conducts system edit checks and rectifies errors as necessary.
• Responds to requests for coding information from various sources.
• Communicates opportunities for document improvement and coding concerns to providers, departments, and/or designated leaders for further action and resolution.
• Engages with internal stakeholders and external vendors to gain additional specificity and/or clarification when documentation appears inconsistent or incomplete.
• High School diploma or equivalent, along with 2 years of experience as a medical coder is required.
• An Associate's degree is preferred.
• Proficiency in ICD-10CM, CPT, and HCPCS is required.
• A working knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy is essential.
• Preferred credentials include American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) accreditation examination for Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
• Certification as a Professional Coder (CPC) from the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) or Certified Medical Coder (CMC) from the Practice Management Institute is preferred.
