This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Alabama, +26 more states.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of data engineers and architects.
• Define and implement the technical roadmap for production database systems including MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and Elastic.
• Take ownership of the architecture and governance related to binlog replication, logical replication, and CDC workflows.
• Enhance strategy and reliability for ELT/ETL pipelines and Kafka-based streaming architectures.
• Set benchmarks for performance optimization, query tuning, indexing, and database scaling across various teams.
• Manage backup, failover, disaster recovery (PITR), and incident response for all production data systems.
• Promote cost efficiency, infrastructure optimization, and monitoring for cloud-managed data services such as AWS RDS, Aurora, and DynamoDB.
• Advocate for data integrity, security, and compliance standards across all data engineering initiatives.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with backend, data science, infrastructure, and product teams to ensure alignment on data platform priorities.
• Establish engineering guardrails, best practices, and documentation to foster team autonomy and maintain quality at scale.
• Lead the assessment and selection of next-generation data warehousing technologies such as Snowflake, Databricks, and AWS Redshift Serverless, evaluating performance, cost, ecosystem compatibility, and migration complexities to guide platform decisions.
• Oversee the design of an enhanced data model for the warehouse in collaboration with data engineers and architects, setting standards for schema design, partitioning, access patterns, and downstream consumption.
• Manage the complete migration from the existing Redshift warehouse, including planning the phased approach, mitigating cutover risks, and ensuring uninterrupted downstream reporting and analytics throughout the transition.
• Over 8 years of experience in data or database engineering, with at least 2 years in an engineering management position.
• Extensive hands-on experience with MySQL and/or PostgreSQL in high-availability production settings.
• Demonstrated success in leading and developing engineering teams in dynamic, data-driven environments.
• Strong expertise in binlog/logical replication and integrating OLTP systems with Kafka.
• Proven experience in designing and supporting ELT/ETL pipelines at scale, ensuring safety and efficiency.
• In-depth understanding of ACID principles, transaction isolation, and database internals.
• Familiarity with AWS-managed database services (RDS, Aurora, DynamoDB) and infrastructure cost management.
• Experience in evaluating or migrating data warehouse platforms such as Redshift, Snowflake, Databricks, or similar technologies.
• Background in designing or redesigning dimensional or analytical data models for large-scale warehouse environments.
• Experience in separating OLTP and OLAP workloads and making architectural decisions accordingly.
• Capability to balance performance, cost, and compliance at an organizational level.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical complexities to non-technical stakeholders.
