Machine Learning Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Nigeria.

📋 Description

• Design and implement a payment volume forecasting system tailored for each merchant, incorporating time-series decomposition, region-specific event calendars (such as salary cycles, MNO maintenance periods, and public holidays), and quantile regression to establish uncertainty bounds.

• Develop and sustain fraud and anomaly detection mechanisms throughout the payment infrastructure, utilizing both residual-based and model-driven approaches with a tiered alerting system aligned to merchant risk profiles.

• Manage the complete dynamic merchant segmentation system, combining rule-based and data-driven methods, with percentile thresholds anchored in exploratory data analysis and segment-transition features serving as inputs for machine learning.

• Instrument and oversee deployed models, implementing drift detection, retraining triggers, and evaluation pipelines using Vertex AI.

• Create automation tools that complement the core machine learning efforts, including Airflow DAGs, pipeline scaffolding, and resources aimed at minimizing operational burden.

• Participate in product and strategic development initiatives.

• **What We're Looking For**

• A minimum of 3 years of experience as a machine learning engineer in a production setting.

• Proficient in Python and comfortable utilizing Spark for processing large datasets.

• Experience in time-series modeling, including decomposition, forecasting, and anomaly detection.

• A strong understanding of the machine learning lifecycle as an integrated discipline.

• Capability to work with batch infrastructure and thoughtfully design around it.

• A proactive ownership mentality: you identify issues and resolve them without waiting for assignments.

• Ability to pinpoint deficiencies in data-driven business processes and propose solutions.

• Strong plus:

• Familiarity with Vertex AI, including custom training jobs, model registry, pipelines, and monitoring.

• Experience in payments, fintech, or any field where label quality, distribution shifts, and operational constraints pose significant challenges.

• Exposure to the dynamics of the African market.

• Experience with n8n or similar automation/workflow tools.
