This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.
• Evaluate and make underwriting decisions for life and critical illness insurance applications, with approval limits reaching up to $10 million.
• Collaborate with assigned underwriters to analyze complex, high-value, or development-centered files.
• Review underwriting strategies, evidence requested, documentation, decision-making rationale, and impacts on customers/advisors.
• Provide training, coaching, and mentorship to underwriters.
• Assist in cultivating future-ready underwriting skills through digital tools, AI-driven decision support, data-informed insights, and ongoing improvement practices.
• Ensure consistent application of underwriting guidelines, Manulife’s core philosophy, financial and medical underwriting principles, and risk management strategies.
• Aid underwriters in understanding business implications, including requirement ordering, amendments, advisor communications, cycle times, customer experiences, persistency, and competitive positioning.
• Efficiently manage co-signing and underwriting tasks while upholding service standards and timely decision-making.
• Offer constructive feedback through case discussions, coaching sessions, office hours, and file assessments.
• Work collaboratively with underwriting leaders, Risk Management, Research, medical directors, and new business teams.
• Identify areas for improvement in underwriting processes, documentation, training methods, requirement ordering, and tool utilization.
• Support performance objectives related to decision accuracy, co-signing quality, underwriter development, service and cycle times, knowledge sharing, capability adoption, and business impact.
• Minimum of 5 years in life and critical illness underwriting experience.
• Proven experience managing complex and high-value underwriting cases.
• In-depth knowledge of life and critical illness underwriting, including medical, financial, non-medical, product, and persistency factors.
• A bachelor’s degree in finance, business, health sciences, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Professional underwriting designations or progress toward FALU, FLMI, ACS, or equivalent credentials are highly valued.
• Proven ability to mentor, coach, and develop underwriters effectively.
• Strong analytical, judgment, and problem-solving capabilities.
• Competence in risk assessment, challenging assumptions, and applying guidelines with appropriate business context.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to convey complex decisions in a clear and constructive manner.
• Familiarity with underwriting technology, digital tools, data insights, and AI-enabled decision support.
