Legal Subject Matter Expert, SME

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Act as the principal legal authority during the training and refinement of AI models, ensuring that all outputs comply with legal standards and appropriate terminology.

• Create knowledge bases, legal taxonomies, and ontologies that capture multi-jurisdictional standards and intricate legal hierarchies.

• Annotate, label, and verify datasets utilizing specific legal expertise (e.g., case law references, statutory interpretations, and contractual provisions).

• Collaborate with AI/ML engineers to formulate training data strategies and prompt engineering methods specifically designed for legal reasoning and drafting.

• Provide expert insights on model outputs, recognizing 'hallucinations,' legal inaccuracies, or ambiguities to enhance the model’s dependability in critical environments.

• Partner with product teams to synchronize AI functionalities with legal objectives, such as shortening discovery timelines or automating risk assessments.

• Keep abreast of emerging trends in LegalTech and AI-related regulations to ensure ethical and compliant model deployment.

⛳️ Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) or Master of Laws (LLM) from an accredited law institution.

• Active bar membership is advantageous.

• 10–20 years of experience in the legal field (e.g., private practice, in-house counsel, or legal research).

• Demonstrated ability to convert complex legal processes into structured logic and data requirements.

• Outstanding writing and verbal communication skills, with the capability to connect technical AI teams and legal stakeholders effectively.

• Knowledge of legal tech stacks such as CLM (Contract Lifecycle Management), eDiscovery platforms, or legal research databases (Westlaw/LexisNexis).

• Understanding of ethical Generative AI practices, including bias detection and responsible data usage.

• Familiarity with Generative AI concepts, prompt engineering, and data preparation is beneficial.
