This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Accountable for overseeing and coordinating all technical aspects of substations and balance of plant for large and high voltage substation projects.
• The Lead Engineer is responsible for identifying key internal and external stakeholders along with their requirements, such as technical information and execution strategy, while fostering effective communication to ensure efficient collaboration.
• Responsible for engineering tasks on the assigned project, including schedule development and updates, ensuring design safety, planning and tracking design reviews, design optimization, on-time delivery, risk management, and quality control/quality assurance.
• Collaborate with both internal and external team members, including the Project Engineering Director, discipline Project Engineering Managers, Designers, CAD Operators, Project Managers, and supporting organizations.
• Tasked with preparing and delivering the concept and detailed design for power single line drawings, physical substation general arrangement layouts, plan and elevation drawings, equipment erection drawings, construction details, and layouts for high voltage bus, cables, high voltage equipment, electrical clearances, conduits, and auxiliary power.
• Responsible for producing optimized outdoor general arrangements for AIS and indoor arrangements for HV/MV/LV equipment in control buildings and GIS buildings.
• Capable of creating and delivering technical specifications and data sheets for all major high voltage equipment.
• Must oversee or self-perform related studies and calculations, as well as the development of bills of material.
• Manage a combined project Bill of Materials and Material Data List from various sources, including writing and/or reviewing technical specifications for high voltage equipment, supporting sourcing for vendor quotations and reviews.
• Serve as the single point of contact for technical issues for both the customer and the project manager.
• This role is customer-facing and requires a credible presence when interacting with clients.
• The Lead Engineer is responsible for managing technical change control and overseeing risk management.
• Address site Requests for Information (RFIs) and conduct field inspections to verify compliance.
• Accountable for fulfilling customer engineering Critical to Quality (CTQ) requirements.
• Provide support for proposals and tenders related to HVDC or substation projects, including estimating man-hours and the application of major equipment.
• Must have a background in completing similar high voltage substation design projects in the past.
• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited institution (BSEE is strongly preferred).
• At least 5 years of experience in Transmission & Distribution substation engineering for electric utilities, along with experience as an Electrical Project Engineer in substation-type applications, including primary (outdoor) substation design and necessary studies.
• Willingness and capability to travel up to 20%, including international travel.
• Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) License or P.Eng License.
• Extensive experience applying North American High Voltage substation standards and guidelines (IEEE & ANSI standards and codes such as NEC and NESC), local Grid Codes, and related equipment (safety, application, sizing, and integration).
• Familiarity with GE GIS equipment.
• Strong knowledge of design aspects pertaining to HV/MV equipment such as reactors, capacitors, transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, and balance of plant systems.
• Professional Engineering license in the United States, with the willingness to review and seal your work and that of others under your supervision.
• Strong understanding of contract and project management, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), or Engineering Equipment Package (EEP) project execution.
• Solid knowledge of civil engineering and structural design requirements related to substations.
• Proficient in applicable design calculations for primary and secondary equipment, including battery sizing and DC system component selection, power transformer and circuit breaker selection, circuit protection, control and power cable selection and rating, bus fittings, insulators, and arrester selection, ground grid design, and lightning protection.
• Experience in field-testing and commissioning with a focus on safe work practices.
• Demonstrated capabilities in electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to manage multiple projects concurrently.
• Proficient computer skills, including programming and design automation, with familiarity in AutoCAD, BIM, and Revit being highly desired.
