Lead Electrical Power Systems Engineer

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Canada.

📋 Description

• Conduct comprehensive system studies independently as outlined below; additionally, specify the scope, review, provide feedback, and supervise third-party providers for the following studies: Load Flow, Reactive Power Capability and Compensation, Power Factor Study, Short Circuit Study, Combined Short Circuit Ratio (CSCR) Study, Transient Switching and Insulation Coordination Study (including Transient Overvoltage and Recovery Voltage Analysis), Main Circuit Parameters, Harmonic Performance/Stability Study, Transient Ride Through and Dynamic Performance Studies (DPS), and other Design Studies utilizing Offline Simulation Tools. Overall System Performance Assessment Study and integration of dedicated studies for systems employing combined AC power sources; AC power sources encompass conventional generation, AC-BESS, turbines, and renewable sources.

• Create detailed technical specifications and factory acceptance testing criteria for significant HV equipment, such as transformers, GSU, breakers, disconnect switches, etc.

• Exhibit excellent technical communication abilities to deliver guidance, analysis, and reports in a clear and concise manner to customers, project teams, and stakeholders.

• Offer guidance and coordinate engineering tasks to fulfill project/tender requirements.

• Hold technical responsibility in areas of expertise.

• Foster innovation by developing and industrializing solution tools and processes related to system studies.

• Engage in value engineering (process improvement): evaluate and document design processes while creating new or enhanced procedures.

• Uphold engineering discipline, establish processes across all tasks, and ensure adherence to company policies, quality procedures, and work instructions (e.g., through training sessions and technical reviews).

• Represent the organization at external events by publishing technical papers.

• Commit to enhancing your technical knowledge base and staying updated on relevant methodologies and technological advancements within the company.

• Support and mentor fellow engineers to boost the team's technical expertise and competence.

• Promptly report or address any non-conformances.

• Actively engage in defining corrective actions when work is deemed unsafe or when uncontrolled risks are identified.


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, covering power systems and power electronics subjects, with established professional experience and technical proficiency in power system engineering, preferably in AC substations and power plant system studies.

• At least 5 years of experience in network or transient studies for conventional electric-energy generation, FACTS, renewable energy, or inverter-based power systems in offshore wind, industrial applications, utility substations, and grid interconnections.

• Willingness to travel 20%, including internationally, and comply with GE travel guidelines.

• Knowledge of North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) compliance requirements and/or ISOs' interconnection or transmission planning guidelines.

• Familiarity with NERC standards such as TPL, MOD, and PRC.

• Familiarity with ISOs such as PJM, ERCOT, MISO, SPP, CAISO, ISO-NE, and NYISO.

• Proficiency in frequency and time-domain simulation tools, including PSCAD, PSS/E, ETAP, and DigSilent PowerFactory, to conduct system studies as outlined above or under desired characteristics.

• Strong understanding of medium to high voltage substation North American standards and guidelines (IEEE & ANSI standards and codes such as NEC and NESC), local grid codes, and related equipment (safety, application, sizing, and integration).
