Kong / Lua Engineer, API Gateway

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Ukraine.

📋 Description

• Develop plugin functionalities for Kong or OpenResty using Lua.

• Execute request classification for inference, training, RAG, video, compute, and edge inference APIs.

• Manage JWT/OIDC tenant identity extraction and validation processes.

• Implement Redis-backed quota checks, concurrency limits, routing lookups, and request metadata management.

• Oversee low-latency connection pooling and timeout management.

• Ensure gateway observability by monitoring p50/p95/p99 latency, errors, Redis latency, routing decisions, and tenant-level behavior.

• Conduct load and failure testing across various scenarios, including Redis outages, malformed tokens, quota limits, and routing-table updates.

⛳️ Requirements

• Experience with Kong plugins, OpenResty, Nginx Lua, or high-performance API gateways.

• Proficient in Lua or systems scripting within production traffic environments.

• Familiarity with Redis, including connection pooling, timeouts, failover strategies, and latency debugging.

• Knowledge of JWT/OIDC, API gateway routing, tenant-aware request processing, and p99 performance metrics.

• A production-oriented mindset focusing on hot-path safety, observability, and staged rollouts.

• Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
