This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Oversee, enhance, and uphold ALDF’s brand, ensuring a consistent organizational voice and messaging throughout all content.
• Create and implement a thorough editorial strategy that aligns with the organization's priorities and campaigns, broadening reach and impact.
• Establish content goals, voice, tone, and messaging guidelines.
• Spot storytelling opportunities that augment the organization’s influence and thought leadership.
• Manage the editorial calendar across digital, print, and multimedia platforms.
• Develop messaging frameworks for extensive institutional projects.
• Maintain editorial standards, including fact-checking and ethical storytelling practices.
• Supervise the production of digital and printed materials such as articles, reports, blog posts, newsletters, digital ads, and social media content, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in all outputs.
• Create primary messaging and storytelling content for the organization.
• Oversee efficient production systems, including publishing workflows, timelines, and quality control measures.
• Edit and approve content to guarantee clarity, accuracy, and adherence to brand standards.
• Convert complex policy, research, or programmatic content into engaging narratives.
• Lead, mentor, and manage a team of content writers, digital, and social media personnel.
• Provide editorial direction, performance feedback, and professional development opportunities.
• Collaborate with program, advocacy, fundraising, and marketing teams to ensure relevant stakeholders are involved in strategy development and content approval.
• Manage relationships with external contributors, design consultants, vendors, and agencies as necessary.
• Ensure all content receives approval from program directors, the communications director, and the executive director as required.
• Oversee CMS (e.g., WordPress), content distribution channels, and the design of user experiences through these platforms.
• Supervise and enhance digital advertising strategies and their execution.
• Oversee efforts to optimize for AI, SEO, email, and social media platforms.
• Guide and improve content performance (web traffic, engagement, conversions), utilizing insights to refine strategies and increase impact.
• Report on key metrics to leadership.
• A Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field is preferred.
• In the absence of a degree, a minimum of 5 years of communications experience may be considered equivalent.
• 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in a leadership role, driving editorial, journalism, or digital content strategies.
• 3+ years of experience managing a team of content writers, digital, or social media staff.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
• A strategic mindset and sound editorial judgment.
• Experience in developing and implementing editorial strategies, organizational messaging, and branding identity guidelines.
• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to set goals, prioritize tasks effectively, manage editorial workflows, and execute new initiatives.
• Excellent collaboration skills and the capacity to work within a team environment.
• Experience in translating complex topics (policy, research, social issues) into accessible content.
• Expertise in audience development.
• Proficiency with CMS platforms, analytics tools, and digital publishing best practices.
• Experience with multimedia content.
• Familiarity with nonprofit, advocacy, or mission-driven communications is preferred.
• A commitment to and understanding of the mission of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
• The ability to travel periodically for staff meetings and retreats (estimated 1-3 trips annually).
