Government Affairs Manager

📋 Description

• Engage in outreach to Congress and their staff in a bipartisan manner to promote organizational policy objectives.

• Assist in the execution of the biennial NRPA legislative agenda and its annual updates by participating in ongoing team discussions, strategy formulation, assessment, talking points preparation, case-making, and feedback collection.

• Partner with the department and contracted lobbying firm to create a targeted outreach strategy to enhance engagement with Congressional members and staff who are strategically important to NRPA and its members.

• Compose, process, and distribute NRPA’s written communications to Capitol Hill, including organizational letters to Congress and congressional newsletters, in collaboration with the marketing and communications team.

• Address NRPA member inquiries regarding legislative updates and provide timely guidance on congressional actions.

• Assist in building and fortifying strategic partnerships with organizations and community groups that advance NRPA’s policy agenda outcomes.

• Contribute to the engagement strategy for the NRPA Advocacy Committee, including participation in committee meetings.

• Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) Session Reviewer for advocacy and public policy topics during the call for proposals and aid the Conference Program Committee (CPC) in assessing proposals for NRPA's annual conference.

• Provide support at NRPA's Annual Conference, which may involve assistance with the Opening Reception, Special Events, Membership Area, Volunteer Coordination, Education Session Speaker Support, Hybrid Streaming/Virtual Session Support, or other onsite conference needs.

• Represent NRPA with coalition partners as assigned.


⛳️ Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Policy, or a related discipline.

• 2-4 years of experience working in Congress or in a legislative affairs capacity within a relevant nonprofit or association.

• Extensive knowledge of and familiarity with the legislative process.

• Proven ability to devise and implement legislative activities.

• Understanding of programs, systems, and policies that influence park and recreation, environment, access, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

• Capability and comfort in engaging with individuals from all political backgrounds and beliefs, while finding common ground on our bipartisan agenda without personal political bias.

• High emotional intelligence, cultural sensitivity, and the ability to collaborate with diverse individuals, communities, and cultures.

• Strong skills in relationship-building.

• Demonstrated proficiency in effective communication—both verbally and in writing—with a variety of audiences, including elected officials, their staff, community advocates, and the public.

• Experience in delivering content through presentations, webinars, and facilitating meetings.

• Exceptional writing skills with the ability to simplify complex issues for both the general public and policymakers.

• Strong computer proficiency, particularly in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), web-based communications, social media, and basic design software.

• Excellent listening skills and the ability to present concepts clearly to various audiences while facilitating discussions.

• A professional, confident, and approachable demeanor.

• Self-motivated and detail-oriented.
