This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in District of Columbia, +1 more state.
• Create clear and engaging documents regarding utility regulation, electricity rates, grid modernization, utility expenditures, rate cases, transmission, data centers, and related topics for various audiences, including policymakers, media, and consumers.
• Assist in drafting and editing reports and major publications for PowerLines.
• Analyze and summarize filings from public utility commissions, commission orders, reports, testimonies, and policy documents.
• Produce blog posts, fact sheets, policy briefs, newsletters, resources for reporters, op-eds, and other materials intended for public dissemination.
• Aid in the development of resources for journalists focusing on utility regulation and energy affordability.
• Work alongside policy, research, and communications teams to gather feedback and enhance materials.
• Adjust tone and format for diverse audiences, including policymakers, journalists, advocates, and the general public.
• Adhere to established deadlines for both short- and medium-form assignments while maintaining quality and effective communication.
• Proven experience in writing about utility regulation, energy policy, electricity markets, consumer protection, public finance, infrastructure, policy, or related areas.
• Knowledge of state public utility commissions and their role in sanctioning utility rates, investments, and planning decisions.
• Capability to read and comprehend regulatory filings, commission orders, reports, testimonies, and other policy documents.
• Proficiency in articulating complex policy or regulatory concepts in straightforward and accessible language.
• Strong research abilities, fact-checking skills, and capacity for synthesizing sources.
• Exceptional writing, editing, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic environment.
• Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate effectively with policy experts, researchers, communicators, and non-specialist audiences.
• Strong judgment, problem-solving abilities, and skill in identifying key issues in complex regulatory matters.
• Experience as a journalist covering energy, utilities, state government, regulation, or business.
• Background in writing for policy, advocacy, nonprofit, or research organizations.
• Understanding of rate cases, integrated resource planning, transmission planning, utility business models, FERC, RTOs/ISOs, or consumer advocate offices.
• Ability to discern what is newsworthy or politically relevant in complex regulatory developments.
• Experience in creating both short-form and long-form written content.
