Expert Engineer, AI

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Germany.

📋 Description

• Design and construct core Companion services, including the agent orchestration layer, recommendation engine, Business Assistant, and the APIs that interconnect them — facilitating personalized, data-driven guidance on a large scale.

• Deploy production AI agents and agentic workflows that assist microbusiness owners in accomplishing real business tasks, such as creating content, arranging bookings, and enhancing their online visibility.

• Develop and refine our AI platform, enabling other product teams at Jimdo to create their own domain-specific AI agents and experts without needing to rebuild the infrastructure.

• Oversee features from beginning to end across the entire stack — from LLM orchestration and backend services (Node.js/TypeScript, AWS) to the React frontend that is used by hundreds of thousands of users.

• Enhance the system’s intelligence over time: improve prompt strategies, fine-tune agent transitions, implement guardrails, and create a feedback loop between customer actions and measurable business results.

• Influence technical decisions regarding the integration of LLM providers, managing costs and latency, and building resilience (e.g., multi-provider fallback, caching strategies, observability).

• Work collaboratively with product managers, designers, data analysts, and engineers across various teams to define the future direction of Companion — converting product vision into functional software that boosts customer transactions and retention.

• Actively identify technical debt, architectural vulnerabilities, and scalability challenges in a rapidly evolving AI product — and drive sensible enhancements.

⛳️ Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in software engineering, including a minimum of 2 years in a senior or technical leadership position.

• Strong full-stack expertise: Node.js/TypeScript for backends and React for frontends.

• Extensive experience with RESTful APIs, microservices architecture, and cloud platforms (preferably AWS).

• Solid understanding of Kubernetes, Terraform, and GitHub Actions.

• Proven capabilities in system design and architectural leadership.

• Practical experience with LLMs: prompt engineering, LLM API integration, agentic workflows, or AI-driven product features. You have gone beyond experimentation — you have delivered AI features to actual users.

• Expert-level proficiency with AI coding assistants (such as Cursor, Claude Code, or similar) — you utilize them daily to significantly enhance your development speed and can assist others in doing the same.

• Ability to critically assess AI-generated code and determine when to accept, modify, or reject suggestions.

• Proven capability to quickly grasp new domains and codebases and make significant contributions with minimal onboarding.

• Strong product sense — you are invested in what you are building and why, not just how it is built.
