This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Pennsylvania.
• Address the effects of climate change within Pennsylvania.
• Investigate the connections between a warming planet and factors such as land use, business, energy, water, policy decisions, environmental justice, health, and solutions to the climate crisis.
• Maintain a balance between iterative and feature reporting, generally producing two to four stories each month.
• Pinpoint areas suitable for consistent coverage, including actions by the state climate committee, climate-related legislation, and regulations from the Department of Environmental Protection.
• Suggest, develop, and implement in-depth enterprise stories that delve deeper into the subject matter.
• Write comprehensively and with nuance about intricate environmental and climate issues impacting Pennsylvania.
• Occasionally modify stories for a national audience and republish them on Grist.org.
• Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.
• Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related discipline (preferred).
• A minimum of three (3) years of reporting experience.
• Proven news judgment, adherence to ethics, and innovative storytelling approaches.
• Capability to craft a thoroughly reported, well-written story that incorporates both data and narrative elements.
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Passion for using journalistic engagement practices to benefit audiences.
• Strong track record of collaborating with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and experiences on team projects.
• Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to excel in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with a keen focus on detail and accuracy.
• Comfortable utilizing content management systems, social media, and project management tools.
• Capacity to respond constructively to feedback and engage positively in collaborative, team-oriented projects.
• Digital reporting and writing experience is preferred.
• A portfolio submission and/or writing assignment will likely be part of the interview process.
• Must be able to work from anywhere in Pennsylvania.
• Opportunity to conduct an investigation if a suitable topic is found.
