Engineering Manager, Ruby on Rails

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Portugal.

📋 Description

• Lead and guide a backend-focused team, ensuring high technical standards, efficient delivery, and team wellbeing.

• Remain actively involved with the Ruby on Rails codebase.

• Take ownership of the technical architecture within your team's domain.

• Collaborate with product managers and engineering leadership to convert roadmap priorities into actionable technical plans.

• Advocate for engineering best practices.

• Identify and implement AI-enhanced workflows to speed up delivery and minimize repetitive tasks.

• Foster a culture of continuous improvement: lead retrospectives and help remove obstacles for your team.

• Work cross-functionally with other Engineering Managers and the Head of Engineering.

⛳️ Requirements

• Over 8 years of experience in backend engineering, including 2-3 years in an engineering management or technical lead role.

• Extensive hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails.

• Strong background in designing and evolving scalable backend architectures.

• Experience working with a large Rails monolith.

• Familiarity with agentic AI or LLM tools.

• Excellent asynchronous communication skills, effectively collaborating with distributed teams.

• Lead with empathy, offering direct feedback and fostering psychological safety.

• Nice to have: experience with microservices, Kafka, or distributed systems in a high-volume SaaS context.

• Nice to have: previous experience in a shipping, logistics, or eCommerce platform.
