This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States, +2 more states.
• Lead the engineering design and implementation of large-scale BESS projects from initial concept through to construction and commissioning.
• Review and approve BESS electrical design packages for projects across the United States.
• Act as the technical lead, offering guidance, mentorship, and technical oversight to engineers and designers.
• Design and evaluate medium-voltage collection systems, AC/DC power systems, inverter/PCS systems, battery container integration, auxiliary systems, and protection and control schemes.
• Conduct and supervise power system studies, including load flow, short circuit, grounding, arc flash, protection coordination, ampacity, and loss analysis.
• Review and validate engineering calculations, design packages, technical reports, specifications, and construction drawings.
• Oversee engineering scope, schedules, budgets, and resource allocation across various projects.
• Collaborate with project managers, clients, utilities, EPCs, equipment vendors, and internal multidisciplinary teams.
• Assist clients with proposal development, project scoping, and business development strategies.
• Review and approve manufacturer equipment drawings, technical submittals, and vendor documentation.
• Ensure adherence to relevant codes, standards, QA/QC procedures, utility requirements, and project specifications.
• Identify technical risks, create mitigation strategies, and address complex engineering challenges.
• Support procurement, construction, commissioning, and startup activities, including field visits and technical troubleshooting.
• Conduct QA/QC reviews on project deliverables produced by engineering staff.
• Contribute to the development of engineering standards, design guides, and best practices.
• Keep abreast of emerging BESS technologies, energy storage trends, utility requirements, and developments in the renewable energy market.
• A Professional Engineer (PE) license in the United States is required.
• A minimum of 8 years of progressively responsible experience in BESS, renewable energy, utility, transmission, distribution, or power systems engineering.
• A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, or a related field is required.
• Proven experience as a lead engineer or technical lead on utility-scale BESS projects.
• Extensive experience in designing medium- and low-voltage electrical systems and their associated infrastructure.
• Strong knowledge of switchgear, switchboards, panelboards, protective relays, breakers, transformers, and protection systems.
• Experience with battery container systems, Energy Management Systems (EMS), Battery Management Systems (BMS), and SCADA integration.
• Proficient in designing inverter and PCS equipment along with related interconnections.
• In-depth understanding of IEEE, NEC, NESC, NFPA, CSA, and utility interconnection standards.
• Experience conducting power system studies using ETAP, CYME, SKM, EasyPower, PSCAD, or similar software.
• Familiarity with HOMER, Energy Toolbase, ESWare, or similar energy storage analysis platforms.
• Knowledge of utility-scale solar, wind generation, substations, and transmission systems.
• Experience facilitating interconnections to transmission, distribution, substations, and renewable generation facilities.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and achieve results in a fast-paced environment.
• Willingness to travel periodically (10%) within the United States as project requirements dictate.
