This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Establish the tax function from the ground up. As our inaugural dedicated tax hire, you'll start with a clean slate alongside outside advisors to create the operating model, define roles, set the calendar, and select the necessary tools.
• Manage the multi-state nexus landscape — covering payroll, customer, and economic nexus in relation to our remote workforce and customer base. Develop and implement the registration and compliance strategy.
• Define and safeguard US federal tax positions — including R&D credit (§41), §174, capitalized software, equity compensation deductions, and pre-IPO restructuring.
• Construct our international tax framework. As we embark on global expansion, you will be responsible for designing the structure from the beginning — including transfer pricing models and intercompany agreements, IP location and migration, GILTI/FDII, entity structuring, and permanent establishment risk.
• Develop the sales and use tax operating model — addressing taxability, nexus monitoring, registrations, returns, and exemption certificates. You should have strong opinions on the appropriate tools to utilize.
• Act as the key liaison with external tax advisors — determine the scope of work and decide what will be managed in-house. Currently, our focus is on Big 4 federal compliance, with scope for SALT, international, and transfer pricing engagements as required.
• Collaborate with the Director of Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting on matters related to equity compensation (ASC 718 / IRC 409A), business combinations (ASC 805 / §338, PPAs), capitalized software, and complex financing instruments.
• When the time is right, create our first ASC 740 provision from scratch — including workpapers, footnotes, disclosures, and tie-outs — adhering to the rigor demanded by external audits and S-1 requirements. Currently, we do not have a provision in place; you will set it up as audit preparation necessitates.
• Establish the groundwork for public-company tax disclosures and SOX readiness — including workflows, controls, and schedules to support 10-K / 10-Q tax footnotes.
• Leverage AI extensively for tasks such as research, memo drafting, nexus analysis, transfer pricing benchmarking, peer disclosure analysis, and workflow automation — and create your own tools where beneficial.
• Build the tax team as we continue to grow.
• Active CPA, JD with tax LLM, or MST qualification. Experience at a Big 4 or national firm is preferred.
• Over 8 years of progressive corporate tax experience, demonstrating a deep understanding of US federal and multi-state tax, along with practical experience in international tax — including transfer pricing, IP structuring, GILTI/FDII, and intercompany transactions.
• Hands-on technical expertise in areas critical to our audit and S-1 — including federal positions like R&D credit and §174, multi-state SALT, indirect taxes, equity compensation tax, and ASC 740.
• Proven experience in preparing or reconstructing tax provisions, footnotes, and disclosures from the ground up — not merely reviewing them.
• Experience managing external auditors and tax consultants — defining scope, providing direction, and effectively pushing back when necessary.
• Proficiency in coding scripts and small automations (Python, SQL, or equivalent) for tasks such as nexus monitoring, provision tie-outs, exposure modeling, and extracting structured data from unstructured sources.
• A builder's mindset — comfortable with uncertainty, proactive rather than waiting for established procedures, and a strong inclination to execute.
• An AI-native work style — utilizing LLMs on a daily basis and able to discuss their capabilities and limitations in the context of tax.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills — capable of translating complex tax concepts for non-tax stakeholders without losing accuracy.
• High integrity, a strong sense of ownership, and a low-ego approach.
• Medical, dental, and vision benefits
• Annual wellness stipend
• Mental health support
• Life, short-term disability, and long-term disability income insurance plans
• Unlimited paid time off (PTO)
• Generous paid parental leave
• Flexible work schedule
• 12 paid company holidays in the US
• Quarterly personal productivity stipend
• One-time stipend for home office enhancements
• 401(k) plan with company matching
• Tax savings programs
• Learning and education stipend
• Opportunities to participate in talks and conferences
• Employee resource groups
• Workshops and sessions focused on AI enablement
