This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.
• Collaborate with the Chief Narrative Officer and Executive Director to co-create a communications strategy that enhances the organization’s brand, content, initiatives, and personnel, establishing the organization as an authority, promoting its thought leadership, advancing its impact, and aiding fundraising efforts.
• Work alongside other directors and team members to ensure all campaigns and projects receive strategic public relations and communications support, aligning with campaign and project objectives, target audiences, and available resources while assisting in the development of effective messaging.
• Oversee the organization’s branding guidelines and guarantee brand consistency across our public image and all operational areas, including print and digital platforms.
• Manage relationships with all contractors and vendors associated with marketing and communications, supervising their contracted deliverables.
• Lead the communications department, overseeing a growing team of staff and consultants focused on traditional media, digital media, storytelling, and creative design.
• Create and implement systems and processes to enhance marketing and communications workflows, establishing protocols for testing new strategies and messaging.
• Establish, monitor, and analyze clear and measurable metrics to consistently inform strategic direction.
• Cultivate and strengthen relationships with producers, editors, and journalists, particularly in broadcast and streaming media, while leading media outreach efforts.
• Supervise traditional media operations, including drafting press releases, hosting press conferences, pitching for coverage, and writing opinion editorials.
• Track the daily news cycle and relevant coverage to propose follow-up pieces, ensuring the organization participates in timely public discussions.
• Prepare the Executive Director for media appearances and speaking engagements.
• Manage the organization’s digital footprint, encompassing the website, email communications, and all social media platforms.
• Design and execute an effective marketing funnel aimed at boosting the subscriber base, enhancing subscriber engagement, and increasing small donor support.
• Oversee the production of all written and digital content, including copywriting and creative design.
• Manage the advertising program, including the complete allocation of donated Google Ads funds.
• Minimum of five years of professional experience in developing and implementing effective public relations and communications strategies, with a proven history of securing earned media placements across print, broadcast, and streaming channels, including major national outlets.
• At least two years of professional experience in driving social strategies and content creation for Instagram, Twitter/X, BlueSky, TikTok, and YouTube, which includes gathering, analyzing, and interpreting performance data.
• A minimum of two years of professional experience in directly managing full-time staff and contractors.
• Proven capacity to translate complex issues into clear, specific messaging — not just accessible but also precise.
• Avoids clichés and generic advocacy language, opting instead for concrete, evidence-based narratives that capture the nuances of the work.
• Strong existing relationships and a demonstrated ability to forge new connections with producers, editors, and journalists at both major and niche media outlets, especially those focusing on social and racial justice, business or economics, and politics.
• Proven capability to juggle multiple complex projects simultaneously, planning well in advance of deadlines, maintaining centralized tracking systems, proactively identifying obstacles with proposed solutions, and following through effectively.
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including storytelling and copyediting proficiency.
• A creative mindset oriented towards goal achievement.
• Ability to utilize data and analytics to evaluate impact and refine strategies.
• Experience in identifying and training media spokespeople.
• Understanding of brand standards and a demonstrated ability to clearly define and enforce brand guidelines.
• Experience with email automation platforms like Mailchimp or similar tools.
• Willingness to work beyond regular office hours as required by timely media cycles.
• Working knowledge of criminal justice, the prison industry, and/or the finance sector, with a strong desire to learn more.
• Experience in the criminal justice field is highly preferred.
