Director of Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take charge of the strategy and outcomes for a portfolio that includes shared frameworks, developer tooling, and partner delivery; define excellence for each Squad and maintain that standard.

• Enhance the efficiency of Product & Engineering: promote the use of shared frameworks and services, eliminate redundant efforts across Pods, and demonstrate the multiplier effect using data.

• Establish our Solutions Engineering Squad: expedite roadmap commitments that secure and retain key accounts by developing the agency bench, overseeing contracting and statement-of-work alongside our commercial teams, and implementing the handoff protocol that transitions contracted work into owned, maintained product.

• Revitalize our Product Development Lifecycle through Engineering: seek significant improvements in software delivery, leading the transition from AI-assisted to agentic development, starting with your own Squads and serving as a model for the entire engineering team.

• Manage a structured intake process: this Pod aims to amplify the organization, and you will safeguard its mission rather than allowing it to become a catch-all for unassigned work.

• Recruit, develop, and retain engineering managers and senior individual contributors; take responsibility for performance, succession, and engagement within the Pod.

• Collaborate with the VP of Engineering and CTO on vision, with our Platform Engineering Pod on the interface between infrastructure and application frameworks, and with our Design System team on the foundational front-end.

• Manage the Pod's budget for tooling and agency expenses, and be accountable for the output it generates.

⛳️ Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years in leadership roles within engineering organizations as a Director or Senior Engineering Manager, including experience in managing managers.

• Experience leading engineering during significant growth, scaling teams while a business transitioned from approximately $100M to $300M in revenue, with an understanding of necessary changes in people, processes, and architecture along the way.

• Proven leadership of a platform, foundational, or developer-productivity organization serving other engineering teams, with demonstrable metrics on how you measured and enhanced its impact.

• Experience delivering substantial projects through external partners: selecting agencies or outsourced teams, managing statements of work, and ensuring quality and ownership during handoff.

• Daily user of AI development tools, having redefined how a team approaches software building with these tools.

• A history of attracting, nurturing, and retaining high-quality engineers and future leaders.

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills: capable of making a business case to executives and a technical case to Staff engineers.
