Director of Compliance – Product

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in United States.

📋 Description

• Take ownership of and manage the product compliance function from start to finish, ensuring that all new and existing product features adhere to relevant federal and state laws and regulations governing Sezzle’s consumer lending, BNPL, and payment products.

• Act as the dedicated compliance partner for the Product team, providing guidance on compliance requirements throughout the product development lifecycle; supporting from the initial idea phase through to launch and subsequent iterations.

• Promote the use of AI-driven compliance and RegTech tools, including automated regulatory change monitoring, AI-supported product review processes, and intelligent audit trail systems, to enhance the capacity of the product compliance function and facilitate comprehensive analytical oversight across the product range.

• Utilize AI research tools to stay informed about regulatory changes impacting consumer-facing product features, including updates to FCRA, TILA/Reg Z, EFTA/Reg E, UDAAP, ECOA/Reg B, TCPA, state consumer protection laws, and new regulations related to BNPL products.

• Collaborate with product leadership to discuss and anticipate regulatory changes, aligning compliance efforts with feature development, and ensuring the organization is always prepared for new requirements.

• Conduct regulatory compliance risk assessments at the product level for new features and changes; identify control weaknesses, assess the compliance implications of product decisions, and formulate risk mitigation strategies that enable swift business action without compromising standards.

• Create and sustain product compliance standards and control frameworks that clarify how regulatory requirements influence product design choices, feature specifications, and release criteria.

• Work with product managers, engineers, and UX designers to convert compliance requirements into implementable acceptance criteria, user story guidelines, and actionable implementation advice that product teams can follow.

• Oversee product-level compliance reviews and approvals for features related to consumer disclosures, adverse actions, credit reporting, payment authorization, marketing claims, and data utilization—ensuring compliance with all requirements for each release.

• Establish and manage post-launch product compliance monitoring protocols to evaluate the regulatory performance of deployed features and identify any issues or deviations that necessitate corrective measures.

• Ensure that product compliance issues are documented, monitored, and escalated as needed, with clear accountability and timelines for remediation across product and engineering teams.

• Prepare and present product compliance reports to senior leadership and the Chief Compliance Officer, translating compliance status and risk exposure into clear insights suitable for executive review.

• Design and implement product compliance training and awareness initiatives for product managers, engineers, and designers, utilizing AI-assisted tools and digital formats to enhance compliance understanding across product development teams.

• Foster a culture where compliance is viewed as a competitive advantage and a standard of quality—not an obstacle—encouraging a mindset within the Product organization that builds consumer trust through responsible design.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Law, Business Administration, or a related field; a J.D. or advanced degree is an advantage.

• A minimum of 8 years of experience in a compliance leadership position within fintech, banking, or financial services.

• Proven hands-on experience with AI compliance and RegTech tools (e.g., AI-supported product review processes, compliance workflow automation) to optimize and scale a product compliance function.

• Strong understanding of consumer financial protection regulations relevant to product features, including TILA/Reg Z, FCRA, EFTA/Reg E, ECOA/Reg B, UDAAP, TCPA, and applicable state consumer protection laws; familiarity with evolving BNPL regulatory guidelines is a notable advantage.

• Experience in participating in or supporting regulatory examinations, compliance audits, or supervisory assessments, with the ability to discuss product design decisions and the embedded compliance controls confidently.

• Demonstrated ability to function effectively in agile product development settings; experience in translating regulatory requirements into product specifications, acceptance criteria, or technical control requirements that engineering teams can implement.

• Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to evaluate compliance risk at both feature and portfolio levels, including comfort with product data, user flows, and technical documentation.

• Outstanding organizational skills with a keen attention to detail; capable of managing multiple simultaneous product reviews, compliance initiatives, and stakeholder relationships while maintaining accuracy and momentum.

• Ability to excel in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with competing priorities and changing directions.

• Self-motivated individual who takes ownership, drives initiatives to conclusion, and proactively raises awareness when challenges arise.

• Excellent proficiency in Office, Google Workspace, and AI productivity tools.

• Proven experience working with Claude or equivalent large language model tools is essential; candidates should be comfortable utilizing AI to enhance productivity, research, and communication.

• Compliance certifications (e.g., CCEP, CRCM) are preferred.
