Director, Insurance and Enterprise Risk Management

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Washington.

📋 Description

• Report to the Associate General Counsel, Legal

• Take the initiative in managing TerraPower’s company insurance programs

• Oversee and provide advice on insurance specific to projects

• Manage corporate and project-specific insurance lines, which include property and casualty, financial and professional liability, builder’s risk, OCIP/CCIP, among other coverage

• Collaborate with finance to oversee the surety program, addressing bonding capacity, surety relationships, collateral requirements, and indemnity obligations

• Act as a subject matter expert on both US and international nuclear liability frameworks as well as nuclear insurance policies

• Offer guidance on US nuclear licensing requirements, including 10 CFR § 50.54(w), 10 CFR § 50.75, and 10 CFR § 140.11

• Manage relationships with insurance brokers, placement strategies, coverage negotiations, claims, and certificates of insurance

• Work alongside engineering and EHS teams to implement loss-control measures and manage total cost of risk

• Assess and adopt alternative risk-transfer programs and specialty insurance products

• Analyze risk appetite, capacity for risk-bearing, and standards for risk-sharing utilizing risk analytics and loss modeling

• Partner with legal, procurement, and contracts teams to address insurance and indemnity provisions in commercial contracts

• Ensure compliance with insurance administration relating to policy terms and claims-reporting requirements

• Oversee ERM taxonomy and governance, which includes risk identification, assessment, mitigation, reporting, and monitoring

• Supervise annual enterprise risk assessments and pinpoint emerging risks

• Develop and refine the enterprise risk appetite and tolerances

• Provide executive ERM reports to the ERMC Committee and the Board Audit Committee

• Implement enhancements in risk management and insurance processes

• Create and deliver training sessions on insurance and risk concepts, policies, processes, and best practices

• Collaborate with internal audit, EHS, QA, IT, and finance to facilitate integrated risk management

• Carry out additional duties as assigned


⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a business or risk-management-related discipline, or a comparable combination of education and experience

• Over 10 years of relevant experience in insurance

• A minimum of 3 years in a corporate risk management position is preferred

• Required experience in the nuclear energy, nuclear pharmacy, construction, or utilities sectors, or within insurance brokerage

• Expert knowledge of commercial insurance concepts

• Proven practical knowledge of enterprise risk management and strategies for risk mitigation

• Familiarity with construction methods and industry-standard insurance policies and forms

• Understanding of claims management and experience in managing complex claims

• Knowledge of contract provisions associated with insurance

• Proficiency in data analysis and reporting

• Insight into the regulatory and administrative landscape for risk management

• Strong decision-making and problem-solving abilities

• Excellent analytical and reasoning capabilities

• Strong interpersonal skills across various functions

• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills suitable for executive-level reporting

• Ability to effectively resolve conflicts

• Capability to engage with diverse groups

• Self-motivated, resourceful, and capable of working independently

• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment

• Capacity to safely lift up to 25 pounds

• Travel requirements are 0–10%

• Applicants may undergo U.S. Government export-control review; U.S. citizens, nationals, asylees, refugees, and lawful permanent residents must disclose their status for review

• Preferred certifications include CRM, ARM, CPCU, CRIS, or similar
