Director, Electrical Engineering

This is a fully remote position, open to applicants in Colorado.

📋 Description

• Oversee all technical facets of OFCI electrical equipment strategy, including specification development, procurement assistance, factory testing, integration, and deployment across various simultaneous data center projects.

• Act as STACK’s expert on mission-critical electrical infrastructure systems, which encompass: Medium-voltage utility distribution systems, Diesel standby generator systems, UPS systems and battery technologies, Switchgear and switchboards, Transformers and busway systems, Static transfer switches (STS), Power monitoring and EPMS/SCADA systems, Grounding and bonding systems, and concurrently maintainable and fault-tolerant electrical topologies.

• Provide practical technical leadership throughout the phases of planning, design, procurement, construction, commissioning, energization, and operational handover.

• Direct the technical review, validation, and approval of engineering deliverables created by EORs, vendors, manufacturers, and consultants to guarantee adherence to STACK standards, operational reliability, scalability, and constructability criteria.

• Propel swift technical decision-making and problem resolution to support expedited hyperscale development timelines and challenging project milestones.

• Oversee technical coordination among Development, Construction, Operations, Procurement, Commissioning, and external engineering collaborators to ensure smooth project execution.

• Lead the technical evaluation and selection of OFCI electrical equipment vendors and manufacturers, including: Technical bid assessments, Submittal evaluations, Factory witness testing (FWT), Equipment performance validation, and long-lead equipment procurement strategies.

• Address and resolve RFIs, on-site issues, design clarifications, commissioning findings, and technical risks in real-time to reduce schedule disruptions.

• Create, maintain, and continuously enhance Basis of Design (BOD) standards, electrical design guidelines, procurement specifications, and technical governance protocols.

• Initiate continuous improvement projects focused on: Speed-to-market execution, Reliability and resilience, Constructability, Scalability, Operational maintainability, Energy efficiency, and Cost optimization.

• Provide technical oversight for the integration and energization of electrical infrastructure during construction and commissioning phases.

• Assist operational teams with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, infrastructure upgrades, and reliability enhancement initiatives in existing facilities.

• Assess emerging electrical technologies and infrastructure solutions for relevance in hyperscale and colocation settings.

• Mentor and guide internal engineering staff while fostering accountability, technical rigor, and excellence in execution.

• Contribute to portfolio-wide capital planning and the development of long-term electrical infrastructure strategies.

• Travel to project sites, vendor facilities, and operational locations as necessary to support project execution and provide technical oversight.

⛳️ Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is mandatory.

• Over 15 years of experience in mission-critical facilities and large-scale data center electrical infrastructure design, procurement, construction, and commissioning.

• Extensive hands-on technical knowledge of all primary data center electrical equipment and systems including generators, UPS systems, medium-voltage distribution, switchgear, transformers, busway systems, protective relaying, and power monitoring systems.

• Proven track record in delivering fast-paced hyperscale and/or colocation data center projects within demanding schedules.

• Strong comprehension of concurrently maintainable and fault-tolerant electrical system architectures for mission-critical facilities.

• Demonstrated capability to manage multiple concurrent projects and swiftly address technical and field-related issues with minimal supervision.

• Solid understanding of NEC, NFPA, IEEE, NETA, and pertinent mission-critical industry standards and best practices.

• Experience in leading OFCI equipment procurement, vendor management, factory witness testing, and technical evaluations.

• Background in coordinating multidisciplinary teams, external consultants, OEMs, contractors, and commissioning agents.

• Comprehensive knowledge of constructability, commissioning, energization sequencing, and operational turnover requirements.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferred.

• Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management abilities with the capacity to influence technical and business decisions.

• Highly organized, execution-focused, and adept at functioning effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments.

• Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Bluebeam, AutoCAD, and Adobe Acrobat.

• Preferred experience in supporting hyperscale cloud, AI/ML, and high-density computing infrastructure environments.
